Trump's Justice Department Warns House Republicans Not To Release Disputed FISA Memo
Source: BuzzFeed News
The Trump administrations Department of Justice is fighting a Republican push to release a classified, GOP-drafted memo that alleges government abuse of foreign intelligence laws in the Russia-Trump investigation.
In a letter to the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, the Justice Department warned that releasing the memo without first consulting the department and the FBI would be extraordinarily reckless and could endanger national security.
We believe it would be extraordinarily reckless for the Committee to disclose such information publicly without giving the Department and the FBI the opportunity to review the memorandum and to advise the HPSCI of the risk of harm to national security and to ongoing investigations that could come from public release, Stephen Boyd, the assistant attorney general for legislative affairs, wrote Wednesday to Rep. Devin Nunes, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.
The letter, first reported by ABC News, was posted in full by CNN. A spokesperson for the Department of Justice confirmed the letters authenticity to BuzzFeed News.

The biggest bombshell in my view might be one later in the article: Nunes hasn't even READ the classified material his memo was supposedly based on. I wonder if he ever got his security clearance back?
From the letter: "Seeking Committee approval of public release would require HPSCI committee members to vote on a staff-drafted memorandum that purports to be based on classified source materials that neither you nor most of them have seen."

After all, Republicans insinuating that a memo written by a Republican committee chairman in a Republican-controlled Congress during a Republican presidency is being hidden from the public by some force or entity other than the Republicans strikes me as kind of hilarious. As is the idea that all of these Republicans saw it, but no one leaked it because leaking is just wrong. (It is wrong, but come on.) That said . . . hey, it was just crazy enough to work.

(13,526 posts)Carter Page!!:
¹As a side note, its amusing that half the time Republicans insist that Carter Page was a nobody, just a minor staffer in the Trump campaign who had no influence at all. The other half of the time its an outrage that the FBI was investigating a senior assistant to a guy running for president.

(41 posts)but he's wrong. I have to agree with Pelosi. Impeaching is WAY too good for the POS. He shouldn't get off that light. Much bigger crimes of money laundering and other financial fraud have been committed. Clinton was impeached for lying about a BJ of all things, and it ruined his agenda but he was still in office. We need to aim higher than just impeaching him IMO.
