Journalists at the Los Angeles Times have overwhelmingly elected to form a union, a first for the 136-year-old news organization that for much of its history was known for its opposition to organized labor.

The union drive was launched publicly in October and culminated in an election earlier this month. Results, tallied Friday by the National Labor Relations Board, show workers voted 248 to 44 to be represented by the Washington, D.C.-based NewsGuild-Communications Workers of America.

It's tough times for news organizations. I'm in favor of unions, when there are abuses going on. But they can backfire.

"Tronc (owner of the L.A. Times) also owns the San Diego Union-Tribune, Chicago Tribune, Baltimore Sun and other daily and weekly newspapers.
The union vote affects only workers at the Los Angeles Times and local Times Community News publications."

during my off the clock/break time and was reprimanded for it. When I had to change careers I said my next one had to have a union. I became a teacher and union rep. Reagun killed unions and it is reason #1,000,000,001 why I hate him!

I wonder about the LA Times owner. I know people who worked at the San Diego Union Trib. and they were treated like shit. That paper is a rag and wouldn't line my birdcage with it. Even though they changed owners, it still sucks!
