Schumer after Trump meeting: Progress but no deal yet

Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer (N.Y.) said Friday there are still "a good number of disagreements" with President Trump on immigration and spending with a government shutdown set to go into effect at midnight.
"We made some progress but we still have a good number of disagreements. The discussion will continue," Schumer told reporters outside the Capitol after a meeting with Trump.
Schumer, returning from an impromptu meeting at the White House, said he had "a long and detailed meeting" with Trump that covered all the "major outstanding issues" holding up a government funding bill, but failed to reach a deal.
The lack of a break-through means the Senate may go ahead with a procedural vote on a House-passed funding bill to keep the federal government operating until Feb. 16.

The art of the deal, indeed. Trump is looking like he couldn't deal his way out of a paper bag.

(16,093 posts)Any progress being made is dependent on Trump's ability to actually keep his word, and we all know that isn't in his character!
So, the question now...will the Democrats give the Republicans the 60 votes to pass a temporary spending bill, all the while hoping that Trump will keep his word, whatever that may have been???

(4,267 posts)... Until other Republicans showed up at the meeting and said something to completely change Trump's course. So, what the heck did they tell him?
Were it not for their interference and obstruction, there might have been an agreement well ahead of the point where we needed to worry. Trump was even receptive to it, which resolves a lot of the usual problems.
