UPDATE: Schumer Goes to the White House to Reopen Negotiations
Source: New York Times
The government will shut down at 12:01 a.m. Saturday if lawmakers fail to get an agreement on some kind of spending bill.
On Thursday night, the House passed a short-term extension that would fund the government until mid-February.
In the Senate, Democrats appear ready to block any deal, gambling that President Trump will have to offer concessions to avoid a shutdown.

WaPO article -
With less than 12 hours before a possible government shutdown, President Trump called Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) at midday Friday and invited him to the White House to discuss striking a deal.
The meeting was set to take place as the federal government remained on a path toward closing at midnight. Senate Democrats had rallied against a short-term spending bill that does not offer protections for young undocumented immigrants or address other priorities such as disaster relief, and the House was threatening to adjourn, having already passed the bill Thursday night.
Neither Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) nor House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) planned to attend the White House meeting, according to GOP aides, leaving Schumer in a position of relative influence.
Trump and the Republicans, who control all levers of government, faced the possibility of a shutdown on the first anniversary of his inauguration. According to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll, Americans by a 20-point margin blame Trump and the GOP over Democrats if the government closes.

(43,286 posts)any deal is a bad deal. Let the GOP twist in the wind
"Chuck, you know me, I'm very popular. If you don't give me what I want, I'll blame the shutdown on Democrats! "Shifty Schumer" wouldn't compromise will be the headline, and I'll tweet the house down on you!"
"Mr. President, you hold the majority. You don't need ONE Democrat."

(9,035 posts)60 votes are required in the Senate since this measure affects the deficit.
Simple majority works in the House.
Apparently four Rep Senators are also opposed.

(8,652 posts)...You allow a vote on the Durbin-Graham DACA compromise to be a Senate amendment vote to the House bill without a filibuster and I'll allow a vote on the final CR without a filibuster.
This is a win for our side, as we will get DACA and CHIP.

(8,652 posts)It will have the support of almost all the Democrats and Republican leadership, with Trump's blessing, if the deal is cut the way I described.
It will be the beginning of the end for Trump, as his base will be fractured and feel betrayed. Trump will win no new converts, because the opinion of most of us is based not only on policy, but character.

(115,836 posts)for a long time. He knows that he has to go to the meeting or Trump will accuse him of not wanting to negotiate. But Schumer is a canny old pol and by now I'm sure he knows how to push all the right buttons without Dolt 45 even knowing they're being pushed.

(15,650 posts)to say "I reached out to the Democrats. I tried my best to make this a bipartisan success. I even tried meeting with Schumer alone -- just him and me so we could negotiate a deal to do that. Unfortunately, the Democrats won't budge. They want a government shutdown. I've done more than anyone else could or ever has to make this work. The Democrats are the reason we are all going to have to suffer -- and bigly, believe me -- from a government shutdown."
Trump doesn't care about and doesn't have support to make a deal that the Repugs can agree to. He only cares about covering his own wide ass.

(21,110 posts)out that it is the REPUGs that will kill this bill, not the Democrats. Yet, the Democrats are still being blamed.
BumRushDaShow
(129,450 posts)who indicated that the House bill "doesn't even have enough GOP Senate votes to pass", which is true. There are 51 GOP votes in the Senate.... But then you have -1 because McLame ain't leaving Arizona to vote, so down to 50. And Flake announced he wasn't supporting it, so down to 49. Graham announced a couple days ago he wasn't voting for any short-term (because Drumpf not only suddenly rejected his compromise, but did so in such an insulting and public manner with vile invectives when interupting Graham's explanation of it during that infamous meeting, that Graham still hasn't gotten over the smackdown). So that's 48 and thus a no-go.

(17,030 posts)and why haven't the major news outlets start blaming the repubs?? i mean PUT OUT THERE THE NAMES OF REPUBS THAT ARE NO!!!!!!!!! We've heard NOTHING on this, at least i haven't
BumRushDaShow
(129,450 posts)which was in response to the efforts of a bipartisan compromise that Americans wanted to see, wasn't "blaming the repubs"?
That shithole comment might have been heehaw hilarious to the GOP yahoo 30% "base", but the rest of the country was sickened by it and know it was related to a CR/the government funding situation that should have been taken care of by the end of September when they were instead running around trying to pass tax cuts for the rich while repealing Obamacare.
