House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said GOP leaders will send the House home this weekend, virtually guaranteeing a shutdown unless some last-minute deal is struck.
Weve passed our CR, McCarthy said in an interview following an hour-long House GOP leadership meeting. The House has approved a bill to keep to keep the government open until Feb. 16, but Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats want a resolution to decide the fate of 700,000 Dreamers, or children brought illegally to the United States as children.
Senate Democrats are also seeking a long-term budget deal. Sen. Schumer needs to decide if he wants a shutdown, McCarthy said.
McCarthy said House GOP leaders do not support a very short term CR of four to five days. Weve passed a short-term CR, he said.

Being in the Majority does not mean SHUTTING OUT the rest of the body. This erodes trust in both Houses of Congress in the ability to work together to do right by the American people.
The madness continues.

(23,155 posts)Dems need to be sure not to make this all about DACA, when seniors and disabled folks could be without food due to no checks. They need to talk about S-Chip, disaster relief, then DACA. Go with the greatest numbers to make the most impact. Also talk continually about repugs controlling all government so the closure is on them. Stress drumpfs lies about he would sign a bi-partisan bill and when presented to him he wouldn't agree and went off on a racist hate filled tangent. Make it about that and Dems win.
Still, I just retired and am scheduled to get my first SS check next week. We are lucky, aren't on our last legs, but a few months of no income for me, when my husband could only find a part time job, would be devastating

(8,685 posts)House members are not rushing out the door despite initial claims by GOP leaders that the lawmakers could leave Washington, D.C., which would raise the odds of a shutdown.
Members of both parties voted to defeat a motion to adjourn, with Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) the sole vote in favor, and Rep. Dwight Evans (D-Pa.) voting "present."
The latest guidance from the House majority whip's office advised members to "remain flexible, as additional procedural votes are possible."

Maybe some last minute deal in the works.
