Trump upends GOP strategy to avoid shutdown with call to settle childhood insurance impasse
Source: Washington Post
President Trump upended the GOPs strategy to avert a shutdown early Thursday when he declared that an extension of a federal health insurance program for children should be part of a long term solution and not a stopgap spending plan.
That directly contradicts the thinking of congressional Republicans, who were eager to force Democrats to choose between a popular health care program they have pushed to renew for months and their effort to win legal protections for hundreds of thousands of young undocumented immigrants.
The House is scheduled to vote as soon as Thursday afternoon on the short-term spending bill with the health insurance program attached. Changing the bill could delay its consideration, further reducing the margin of error less than 48 hours before the shutdown deadline.
CHIP should be part of a long term solution, not a 30 Day, or short term, extension! Trump tweeted, using the acronym for the childhood health insurance program, known as the Childrens Health Insurance Program.

Who knows what will happen with CHIP now unless they have a clean bill - which needs to happen at the same time.

(3,150 posts)The guy thrives on chaos. Keeping everyone off balance is his 'style'.
Since he doesn't care about anything other than himself, it doesn't matter to him if anything gets passed or not; as long as he's in the headlines kids can go without health insurance or dreamers can be deported, or not.

Gives him power and attention.

He's a sociopath in a sociopath's preferred position: nothing to lose (he gets publicity, his base loves him, the people who already hate him still hate him) with a slight chance of 'winning' (further consolidating wealth and power for his real peers) and the only damage will be done to the powerless who would never vote for him anyway.

want fresh pastures. In Trump's case it remains to be seen if he will face
any consequences.
But yes there is going to be some major mop up when he is gone.

(129,127 posts)What has been oft-said (and was also noted in "the book" ) was that whoever he talks to last, is who influences him the most at that moment. And the book mentioned how aides tried to jocky time in to get their views implanted in his knowledge-phobic brain as close in timeframe as possible, for when they needed a decision announced by him.

(23,120 posts)Hair Furor WANTS a shutdown because Putin told him he'd profit personally from it, so is making sure this happens. Putin wants the US credit rating to be lowered so it hurts our standing in the world, thereby making Russia look better in comparison than it is. Also, it would hurt our military in foreign countries, another win for Russia. Those 2 oligarchs think a shutdown is a win/win for them personally nad that's what orange assface wants.

(6,189 posts)It surely isn't Trump the stable genius. He, by all accounts, doesn't have a long enough attention span.
His support staff are either not experienced enough of the political ins and outs of the congressional machine or have their own ideological agenda the they want pushed. Miller and Kelly fit in that category.
Ryan and McConnell appear to get their specific strategies upended repeatedly by Trumps hair brain Tweets often driven by the last 15 minute of a Fox news rant.
SO WHO is setting the agenda? Who thinks it through what Congress is doing and how Congress works? I can't believe it is a roll of the dice in the empty space in Trumps head.
WHO?
