During an oversight hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-NH) asked DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, who was at the meeting in question, about the reports.
You were in the room, he told Nielsen. Youre under oath. Did President Trump use this word or a substantially similar word to describe certain countries? Leahy asked.
I did not hear that word used, no sir, Nielsen said.
That is not the question. Did he use anything similar to that describing certain countries? Leahy asked. Various reports days after the fact cited unnamed White House officials who claimed Trump may have been using the word shithouse.
Nielsen responded: The conversation was very impassioned. I dont dispute that the President was using tough language. Others in the room were also using tough language. The concept, and the context, I believe, in which this came up was the concept that the President would like to move to a merit-based system. He would like to not no longer look at quotas

I did not hear that word used: DHS Secretary Nielsen responds when asked about Trumps vulgar comments
By Ed O'Keefe and Nick Miroff January 16 at 11:18 AM
Homeland Security Kristjen Nielsen confirmed that President Trump used tough language in an Oval Office meeting last week over immigration policy, but she said she did not hear him describe some African countries and Haiti as shithole countries, as has been reported.
Nielsen confirmed Trumps tone while testifying under oath to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday morning. Sen. Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.) asked Nielsen whether Trump had used the vulgarity to describe the countries or a substantially similar word.
I did not hear that word used, Nielsen told members of the committee. When Leahy asked again, Nielsen said, The conversation was very impassioned. I dont dispute that the president was using tough language. Others in the room were also using tough language.
The president used tough language in general, as did other congressmen in the room, yes sir, she said later, when Leahy pressed her again.

(16,786 posts)The DHS Secretary was squirming in her seat as she tried to avoid answering the question. Covering up for a racist is not becoming. It just shows how deplorable Republicans coverING up for Trump really are.
"Tough language"? Elaborate what was Sen. Dick Durbin was asking the Secretary to do.
