Walmart quietly lays off thousands of workers after bonus announcement
Source: Think Progress
Thursday morning, Walmart had a flashy announcement: Thanks to corporate tax cuts, it was giving its employees bonuses of up to $1,000. Walmart and President Trump pointed to the announcement as proof that the corporate tax cuts are really a boon to working-class Americans.
This announcement, as ThinkProgress reported earlier, was much more complicated than it first sounds.
But now it appears the announcement was timed carefully to cover for thousands of unannounced layoffs.
Business Insider reports that today, Walmart is abruptly closing numerous Sams Clubs stores across the United States. In some cases employees were not informed of the closures prior to showing up to work on Thursday and learned that their store would be closing when they found the stores doors locked and a notice announcing the closure.

So, they're giving bonuses and laying off people to pay for them?

So that is no loss to Los Angeles.

(67,782 posts)...and bonuses, saying something positive about Arkansas. But she didn't mention anything about the 1,000 layoffs in Arkansas. Bentonville itself has only 35,000 people. If all the laid off people lived in town (doubtful) that would be 1 of ever 35 laid off, and if say 40% are adults, 1 in about 12 adults are laid off.

(34,661 posts)well as Merchandiser's who were relocated to Bentonville by their Companies as a demand of Wal- Mart. Are going to take a big hit, their own Companies have eliminated their Original Positions so they appear to be ASOL .
Most of these folks are in their late fifties and early Sixties. But again, they were only a small portion of the Lay offs. Heard it is or will be closer to 1500.

(32,639 posts)For the most part, holiday workers are only hired on a temp basis anyway.
The store closures are something different though. Sam's Club stores' days are numbered, I suspect. Everybody at Sam's Clubs will be getting pink slips soon.

As for Walmart, I hated shopping there, but it's a necessity for me price-wise.

(19,201 posts)Are you from the Rochester area? I live a little west of there.
Costco is doing great. The Sam's Club in Rochester was old, run down, dirty, and just a shadow of it's former self. Who would want to shop at a place Walmart was clearly neglecting, when they could go to Costco and have just the opposite? Walmart took every penny they could out of the place, and rather than update, pay their employees a living wage, and make people feel welcome.......they just closed the store. Nice bunch of folks. That one-time bonus for the remaining employees of Walmart won't last long in today's marketplace, and every year after that the Walton family will be giving themselves bonuses, in perpetuity. Great PR though, if you don't look any further than the shiny surface Trump and Walmart are promoting.

(19,201 posts)passed the cost of it's employees along to the American taxpayer. They hire people on a part-time basis, trying to keep as many as possible under 40 hrs a week, then the families have to get Medicaid to keep them healthy, and many are eligible for Food-stamps, WIC etc. The high cost of low prices.
Try to explain to Trumptards how shopping at Walmart cost many of them their jobs. This happened decades ago, but we're still feeling the fallout from it. They just won't believe it. Willfully ignorant.
TexasBushwhacker
(20,192 posts)that probably means that the highest bonuses are being paid to the workers who make the most already.

(19,201 posts)this is only a one-time event. Although the Walton family will get these tax breaks in perpetuity, their employees will only get a one-time taste (for most, a very small taste) of it. What great employers the Waltons are.
