WASHINGTON President Trump on Tuesday appeared to endorse a sweeping immigration deal that would eventually grant millions of undocumented immigrants a pathway to citizenship, saying he would be willing to take the heat politically for an approach that many of his hard-line supporters have long viewed as unacceptable.
The president made the remarks during an extended meeting with congressional Republicans and Democrats who are weighing a shorter-term agreement that would extend legal status for undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children. Mr. Trump has said such a deal must be accompanied by new money for a border wall and measures to limit immigrants from bringing family members into the country in the future, conditions he repeated during the meeting on Tuesday.
But in backing a broader immigration measure, Mr. Trump was giving a rare public glimpse of an impulse he has expressed privately to advisers and lawmakers the desire to preside over a more far-reaching solution to the status of the 11 million undocumented immigrants already living and working in the United States. Such action has the potential to alienate the hard-line immigration activists who powered his political rise and helped him win the presidency, many of whom have described it as amnesty for lawbreakers.
If you want to take it that further step, Ill take the heat, Mr. Trump told Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, who floated the idea during the meeting in the White House Cabinet Room on Tuesday. You are not that far away from comprehensive immigration reform.

UPDATE:
Trump, lawmakers agree to parameters of potential immigration deal
BY ALEXANDER BOLTON AND JORDAIN CARNEY - 01/09/18 02:33 PM EST
Congressional negotiators say they have the parameters of an immigration deal following a lengthy bipartisan meeting with President Trump at the White House Tuesday.
The emerging scope of the deal would protect an estimated 700,000 to 800,000 immigrants known as Dreamers from deportation, secure the southern border, reform family-based migration and change the nations diversity visa lottery program.
But many key details still need to be worked out, such as how to weigh family relationships in granting legal status, how to allocate visas available through the lottery program and how much to spend on border security.
Kevin McCarthy was the one who said, Alright, its down to four things, right? DACA and the other three things,' said Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (Ill.), who attended the meeting and made reference to fellow participant House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

(7,947 posts)He wants that stupid wall, and he'll say anything to get it.
We shouldn't fall for it.
"First, do DACA. Then we'll talk about everything else."

(14,838 posts)that basically said he agreed with everyone asking him what he believed. feinstein asked if he supported a clean daca bill, with a broader plan to be worked out later, and he said yes. Then a republican asked him the opposite question, and he said he thought it was what he just agreed to.
The man is MENTAL SILLY PUTTY. He doesn't have a clue what daca is or what the policy implications of any component of immigration are.
He has completely lost it

(13,062 posts)to appear bipartisan in prep for the midterms then he'll pull the rug out from under them. On the other hand, it could also be he's doing this on a whim given he has no sympathy for the dreamers.

(50,566 posts)You know what would happen: He'd get his wall then do everything in his power to overturn the DACA part.
Let's go one better: offer to separate the DACA bill from the wall bill, and include language in the wall bill that not only completely repeals that disastrous tax cut he rammed through but INCREASES taxes - on everyone - to pay for the damned wall. The higher your tax bracket is, the higher your taxes will go. And the more you donate to the GOP, the higher your taxes will go. We'll call it a Luke 12.48 bill - "For unto whomsoever much is give, of him shall be much required; and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more."
I have a feeling Trump's wall is like Palin's Gravina Island Bridge - he'll be all for it as long as it's free; ask him to come up with the money to pay for it and suddenly it's unnecessary.

(24,330 posts)look like idiots if they even sit down to discuss something with him. Complete waste of time, and they should say so. Not hard to cite examples where he has not kept his word.

(50,310 posts)You can't trust him because he's so out of touch with reality. Today was nothing more than a performance. An episode of "Trump Presidency The Reality Show." He performed above average today, only making one big fumble when he agreed to a stand alone DACA bill and had to be rapidly corrected by that idiot McCarthy.
