Gunmen Have Attacked And Entered A Pakistani Air Force Base Thought To House Nuclear Weapons

Source: Business Insider

Gunmen have attacked and entered a Pakistan air force base, according to Reuters.

The target is the Kamra Air Base, located around 40 miles outside Islamabad. The attacked is believed to be conducted by the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) — reports in the Pakistan press have suggested they were planning attacks in retaliation for upcoming military action.

Worryingly, the militants may have good reason to attack the base. Waraich says that the site is home of Pakistan's nascent drone program, and a Telegraph report from 2009 said the site was thought to house Pakistan's nuclear weapons

Afghani(meh) attempts to rein in these extremists - they seem to do a good job of being able to attack, assassinate, bomb, etc - where they will.

Now a base w/ serious WMD.

If necessary bring Pakistan under protection of the US nuclear umbrella.

That is one country that really shouldn't be having nukes.

Well I hope nobody will have them someday. But Pakistan really should not have them right now.

Obama has been a pretty good foreign policy President but this issue of securing Pakistan's nukes has been neglected too long under both Bush and Obama. Hopefully this incident will mark a shift in our policies toward the nukyoolar weapons in Pakistan.

We should at least try. What other policy option do we really have when it comes to pursuing nukyoolar stability in south Asia?

ridding both countries of nukes. If worst comes to worst, I think we should take out Pakistani nukes but thats better then them falling into the wrong hands.

It is the second most populous country in the world and the 3rd largest economy by PPP. India is constantly threatened by China with an overwhelming conventional force.

Also, India has made a "no first strike" pledge and has never been involved in proliferation of nukes like Pakistan.

Or do you think brown-skinned poor people should not be able to defend themselves?

But it sure is scary that 9 people could breach a "secure" nuclear facility.

Damn scary.

The second link above mentions that it appeared as if an AWACS plane was the target.

The Taliban does not give a damn about AWACS. They do not have aircraft of their own. The Pakistanis do not even require one to continue bombing the Taliban along their border, though I'm sure that's what the attackers were told.

But the Israelis sure as hell give a damn, because their only uncontested path to Iran requires flying the length of the Red Sea to the Arabian Sea, and then either into Pakistan and through Iran to attack their target at Bushehr from the rear, or strait up the stovepipe of the Persian Gulf where about ten different air forces, all hostile, can observe them on radar.

A Pakistani AWACS on station near the Arabian Sea would be able to see at least one refueling circuit, and the Israeli planes lining up for a drink both before going in and going home.

Pakistan has only four AWACS planes, and their primary area of interest is along the Indian border, especially in the north. If you blow one of the planes covering that area, another one will have to be diverted from somewhere else--like their only peaceful border, with Iran.

I'm sure those mooks with the suicide gear thought they were working for the Taliban, but you wait about two to ten days (depending on if the operation worked) and see if the Israelis don't penetrate Pakistani airspace near Chabahar before sliding through the mountain ranges leading to Bushehr.

No, I don't know this. I'm just an asshole with the mind of Genghis Khan. That's what Ghengis would do. That's what the Israelis are trying to do. I think it is a terrible idea, which is why I'm saying this here.

And I think Mitt Romney knows all about it.
