North Korea declares latest U.N. sanctions 'an act of war'

Source: The Washington Post

By Amy B Wang December 24 at 1:48 PM

North Korea said on Sunday that sanctions imposed by the United Nations last week are an “act of war,” and Pyongyang vowed to bolster its nuclear force in an outright rejection of the resolution.

“We define this ‘sanctions resolution’ rigged by the U.S. and its followers as a grave infringement upon the sovereignty of our republic and as an act of war violating peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula and the region,” North Korea's foreign ministry said in a statement on state media.

The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously Friday to impose additional sanctions on North Korea because of its missile tests, the third time the Security Council had ratcheted up sanctions this year. This latest round tightens North Korea’s oil imports and calls on other countries to expel North Korean guest workers within two years. Those guest workers are a major source on foreign income for Pyongyang, and two of the biggest employers of North Koreans are Security Council members China and Russia.

The sanctions are part of a continuing effort to coerce the North Korean government into negotiating an end to its development of nuclear weapons. The previous round of sanctions, imposed in mid-September, was followed by more than two months of calm without a missile or weapons test. But on Nov. 29 Pyongyang launched a missile, identified as a Hwasong-15, that it said could reach any part of the United States.

Contrarian instincts.

Tell KJU not to do something and he'll make it his life's mission to do it.

Yeah, yeah. NK will do nothing to actually start a war because Kim knows his military is shit and would be destroyed, along with him, in a short matter of time. I think China would take action against him before he could do anything since they dont want 10 million refugees

But then I thought, "No, wai, that's the otiose rhetoric used in another part of the world by a different set of mindless, fanatic dictators."

More "all rights, no responsibilities." He has a right to oil, nuclear weapons, and having his workers abroad. (Although one has to wonder what'll happen when those workers return, tainted and contaminated by not-true-Korean-juche values. Because, being North Korean, their cultural values are apparently genetically predetermined.)

Who knows if he actually believes it now.

He’s also done a very good job of killing and purging his most senior military officers. The NK’s haven’t fought a war since the 1950’s. Who knows who the military commanders are now, what their competence level is, and and where they were educated.

Meanwhile the American military has been fighting for the last 20 years. Our military leaders are also ridiculously highly educated.

I know the TV series MASH went on longer than the armed conflict. I also know there is an armistice agreement. As far as I know, neither side ever really surrendered or admitted defeat.

So, this is really another "ho hum."

There was never a declaration of war. South Korea on the other hand is still technically at war.

As part of the UN, and since S. Korea is a UN ally we are we have agreed to defend, we are still, technically, at war with N. Korea. As part of the UN forces.

Am I wrong about that? I admit I am not at all certain and I am not trying to be difficult, nor combative in my post.

My goal was to make fun of N. Korea. Not pick an argument with other DUer's.
