Governor vetoes bill to add abortion restrictions

Source: Associated Press

Updated 1:10 pm, Monday, December 18, 2017

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania's Democratic governor has vetoed a bill passed by the Republican-controlled Legislature to limit abortions to the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, rejecting what Planned Parenthood says would have been the nation's most restrictive abortion law.

Gov. Tom Wolf signed the veto paperwork Monday in Philadelphia City Hall.

Pennsylvania's current limit is 24 weeks. The 20-week limit would have kept in place exceptions under current law for when a mother's life or well-being is at risk. It had no exceptions for rape, incest or fetal abnormalities.

The bill also would have effectively banned dilation-and-evacuation, the most common method of second-trimester abortion, and made it a felony to violate it.

The Republican-controlled House voted 121-70 for the legislation that would alter the existing 24-week limit.

The bill passed the Senate in February by a 32-18 vote. The margins in both chambers raise doubts about whether supporters will be able to muster sufficient votes to override Wolf's promised veto.

This was an abhorrent bill designed to harm the most vulnerable women. Straight to the shredder with this one.

Why has this ever been something that the state (any state or any government) is even concerned with. What have reproductive rights do to with running a country? It's nobody's business but the persons involved.

Nothing like a Rogers cartoon to tell it like it is.

Let us all thank the heavens that we have a governor that is willing to fight to keep us (Pennsylvania) from becoming one of the Trumpian states of the US (yeah, I know, we've got Toomey and TurdsEye as opponents, but at least we have SOMEONE out there IN POWER fighting for us!).
