Man arrested over alleged attempt to break into RAF Mildenhall

Source: The Guardian

A man is in custody after allegedly attempting to break into an RAF base used by the US military, according to defence sources.

RAF Mildenhall, in Suffolk, was put in lockdown after a “security incident”, a spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said. The RAF base is primarily used by the United States Air Force.

Suffolk police are leading the investigation and are understood to have arrested an individual after he allegedly attempted to drive through an entry point at the base.

The force described the incident as “significant” and urged members of the public to avoid the area near the base.

It is a USAF base - there are no British forces based there.

Inside the fence, the U.S. could detain him - or fire on him if he threatened them. Outside the fence, they're supposed to call the local police, even if he's trying to cut the fence.

Spouse was USAF stationed at RAF Greenham Commons back in the 1980's during the "No Nukes" protests. They weren't allowed to even react to the protesters on the other side of the fence, and were supposed to call the gendarmes or local RAF support if they had any notion that the protesters were going to try and cut the fence to get in.
You aren't supposed to mess with the locals when stationed overseas, even if they're throwing paint or shit on you.
