UN Security Council to vote on resolution voiding Trump's Jerusalem announcement: report

Source: The Hill

BY BRANDON CONRADIS - 12/17/17 08:19 PM EST

The United Nations Security Council on Monday will vote on a draft resolution that would nullify President Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, according to Reuters.

The resolution, which was drafted by Egypt, doesn't specifically name Trump or the U.S. in its text, the news agency reported on Sunday.

But the one-page draft, which diplomats told Reuters enjoys broad support among the council, comes less than two weeks after Trump announced the U.S. would formally recognize the contested city as Israel's official capital.

In order to pass, the resolution would need the votes of nine of the 15 members of the council. It also cannot be vetoed by the U.S., France, Britain, Russia or China.

Good. The more pissed off he is all the time, the sooner his horrible diet is likely to catch up with him. And I won't be sorry at all.

A U.N. "resolution" can have no legal effect on a decision made by the President, any President, with respect to a matter like this. The recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel by the United States is a unilateral sovereign act on the part of the U.S. government, over which the U.N. has no control whatsoever. This resolution is of "symbolic" value at best.

The US will veto it, but it will send a message that an Egyptian written resolution reafirms the UN position ... which the US via the resolution disputed.

Of course, the US can recognize anything .. and the UN can not cjhange that, but it matters that it does not seem the world is following the US lead.

...and, when he doesn't (which he won't), how does the UN respond?

Seems like a toothless gesture to me.

The US has the right to recognize what ever we want .. the UN can demonstrate that most of the world disagrees.

Said another way THE US IS NOT LEADING THE WORLD, which was the case for almost all Presidents since WWII.

They're going to tell a country where they can and cannot put their embassy?

And it only passes if the US doesn't veto it.

The U.S. was supposed to release all of the JFK documents as well, but...........they just never got around to screening them, even after loud-mouthed Trump played it up as if it was all his idea to release them.

Never, NEVER underestimate the stupidity of anyone in the Trump administration.

If any of those countries veto it, it fails. So for it to pass it requires those five countries plus four of the other ten.

Of course we'd veto.

The measure can not pass if any country with veto power votes no OR less than 9 countries vote for it. The US will veto. The interesting thing will be what the other 14 countries do.

It definately won't pass, but what does it say when the US stands alone? This was a 14 to 1 vote per a later post.

It is not like they can actually enforce it. The U.N. has no leverage on the US. After all, they know who pays the bills.

A UN security council resolution calling for the withdrawal of Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital has been backed by every council member except the US, which used its veto.

The unanimity of the rest of the council was a stark rebuke to the Trump administration over its unilateral move earlier this month, which upended decades of international consensus.

The Egyptian-drafted resolution did not specifically mention the US or Trump but expressed “deep regret at recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem”.

A spokesman for the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, responded to the veto by saying it was “unacceptable and threatens the stability of the international community because it disrespects it”.
