Minnesota Lt. Gov. Tina Smith named to fill Al Franken's Senate seat

Source: Chicago Tribune

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton appointed Lt. Gov. Tina Smith on Wednesday to replace Sen. Al Franken until a special election in November, setting up his long-time and trusted adviser for a potentially bruising 2018 election.

Smith was widely seen as Dayton's top choice from the moment Franken announced his resignation last week, and she is expected to run in the November special election to complete Franken's term through 2020.

While I certainly think that all of them are ratfuckers, this particular quote caught me,

"While Senator Franken is entitled to have the Ethics Committee conclude its review, I believe it would be better for our country if he sent a clear message that any kind of mistreatment of women in our society isn't acceptable by stepping aside to let someone else serve." -Sen. Gillibrand

So, fuck justice, she's running for President in 2020, and if she has to crack a few eggs to make an omelet, then she will.

Bernie caucuses with the Dems, but like so many on this board scream constantly, he's not an actual member of the party. But 32 fellow Dems said "fuck justice, fuck the law, this makes us look good".

military. Al Franken supported the bill.

Personally, I think Gillibrand went after the wrong senator. McCaskill did much more to harm women than Al ever did even if he were guilty of all the accusations.

I trust Gillibrand won't waste her time campaigning in Minnesota in 2020 (at least before the nomination). She's pretty much dead to all the DFLers I know, and I know a lot of them.

going to be a great asset against others who will run against her merely to finish out this term. She's stepping up when asked to and I respect that.

Can't feel too sorry for someone who will get to serve in the U.S.senate, even as a member of the minority party in these scary, dangerous times.

Tina Smith will make an excellent United States Senator. She is a dedicated public servant who’s worked tirelessly on behalf of Minnesotans, and Governor Dayton couldn't have made a better choice for this job. https://www.facebook.com/senatoralfranken/posts/1594969620588914
