Alabama GOP chief: 'This race has ended'

Source: The Hill

BY REBECCA SAVRANSKY - 12/13/17 09:18 AM EST

Alabama Republican Party Chairman Terry Lathan said in a statement late Tuesday that the state's Senate race has ended.

“Now that this race has ended, may this holiday season of peace, love and hope resonate with everyone, regardless of one’s political affiliation," Lathan said.

In the statement, Lathan said the party is "deeply disappointed" in the close race, in which Democrat Doug Jones defeated GOP candidate Roy Moore, who was plagued by accusations of sexual misconduct.

But, he said, "we respect the voting process given to us by our Founding Fathers."
Jones during his campaign repeatedly talked about reaching across the aisle to work with Republicans, Lathan noted.

I wonder if they will be making amends to all those women they accused of lying, along with apologizing to Doug Jones for the lies they told about him. They have sinned bigly.

What I HAVE read is that he can't be seated until the election results are certified, which takes about 2 weeks. If there's any other information out there about this I haven't seen it yet.

Under long-standing Senate rules, Jones can only be seated after the State of Alabama certifies the election results, a process that typically takes between two and three weeks.

For example, Scott Brown won a special election to be a Senator from Massachusetts on January 19, 2010, but wasn't seated until February 4, 2010 because that's when the state's certification of his election was transmitted to the Secretary of the Senate.

Is refusing to seat Jones until the next session of the senate starts in January NOT when the election is certified. In other words, not until they get their tax bill done which they need Luther Strange's vote on.

22. Let's see when Alabama certifies

The author of the article you cite concedes that Alabama probably won't certify until December 26 at earliest, and possibly as late as January 3. That period of two to three weeks (with holidays in the mix) would not be out of the ordinary (and the author doesn't claim it would be). So the question is whether the Senate will still be in session when the certification comes in -- and, again, the author of the article you cite concedes it's entirely likely that the Senate will be in recess at that point, so it would not be possible to swear in Jones until the Senate reconvenes.

What McConnell said was that the winner of the Alabama Senate race probably wouldn't be seated before the Senate finished its work for the year -- which is basically what the author of the article says. The article also points out that McConnell can't unilaterally stop Jones from being seated if Alabama has certified the election and Jones presents the document prescribed by the Senate's rules to the Secretary of the Senate. Once that happens, an immediate vote on whether not to seat Jones would be required.

So, if the Senate is in session when Alabama certifies (unlikely) and Jones presents the required paperwork and a vote is called for and McConnell somehow prevents that vote from taking place, then you might have something.

But that scenario is unlikely in the extreme and I'd wager that Jones will be seated promptly once his election has been certified by the state of Alabama AND the Senate is in session to receive that certification.

Note: in the Moore contributions there is one important and glaring funding partner ------------it says from the State of Georgia, do the citizens of the State of Georgia know about this ?

If given the chance you would have done it again, it was about power and the lack of principles, and you and your party never have played nice, just maybe the era of George Wallace is coming to an end with this election and a change for the good -------------------so again FUCK YOU

It's just we're saving our reach for progressive Republicans when they're not trying to strip middle and lower classes of their rights, money, jobs, healthcare...

Dems aren't just going to turtle for political reasons like some other party I won't name.
