Doug Jones has won the election, according to A.P.
Source: AP via NYT and Twitter
BREAKING: Democrat Doug Jones won election to the U.S. Senate from Alabama in a sharp blow to President Trump that narrows the GOPs majority in the Senate to two. He beat Roy Moore, a former chief justice of the state Supreme Court who had been accused of sexual misconduct.

Once a Long Shot, Democrat Doug Jones Wins Alabama Senate Race
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Doug Jones, a Democratic former prosecutor who mounted a seemingly quixotic Senate campaign in the face of Republican dominance here, defeated his scandal-scarred opponent, Roy S. Moore, after a brutal campaign marked by accusations of sexual abuse and child molestation against the Republican, according to The Associated Press.
The upset delivered an unimagined victory for Democrats and shaved Republicans unstable Senate majority to a single seat.
Mr. Joness victory could have drastic consequences on the national level, snarling Republicans legislative agenda in Washington and opening, for the first time, a realistic but still difficult path for Democrats to capture the Senate next year. It amounted to a stinging snub of President Trump, who broke with much of his party and fully embraced Mr. Moores candidacy, seeking to rally support for him in the closing days of the campaign.

Kudos to the Alabamians who couldn't bring themselves to vote for Dem, but wrote in someone other than Moore. And to the African-American community that turned out in force for Jones.

(9,350 posts)I was hoping Doug Jones would win, but I did not, at the end, completely think it would happen. I got an alert on my phone before the race was called. I thought the alert was going to say Roy Moore had won. The alert did say
Roy Moore was winning white women; colleged educated white women by 11 points. After seeing that alert I really began to worry. I was shocked and relieved when the next alert said Doug Jones had won.

blue-wave
(4,356 posts)that he won college educated women. What can they possibly be thinking? Moore advocates repealing all amendments to the constitution after the first 10 amendments, known as the bill of rights. This would include re-instituting slavery and repealing the right for women to vote. As blinding and misleading as rabid racism can be, I can't believe they are all racist, are they?

The quality of life in Alabama is going to improve because of this election.
Kudos to the DUers who very early on encouraged support for Doug Jones to defeat Roy Moore because of policy, long before the teen girl stuff came out. That kind of early support is what really built up the chances of victory

(8,916 posts)But he only won by 1.5%
This after reports indicated he was leading by nearly double digits.
This means 1 of 2 things:
1) Either pollster are horribly wrong
2) Pollsters are actually very good, but the lead was so big that
the GOP couldn't flip enough votes to steal the election.
This also means we are going to have to work our butts off in 2018.
Races that are razor thin will be stolen by the Greedy One Percent (GOP).
Every race we win will need at least a 6% to 8% cushion or Dems will lose.
Princess Turandot
(4,787 posts)it was from FOX; it gave rise to conjecture that they were possibly hoping to affect turnout by how they worked their sample. (As of 12/9, for example, Emerson polling had Moore up by 9.)
Even with that FOX poll, the RCP average of the last 8 polls (dated 11/30-12/10) was Moore +2.2. Without that 10% FOX poll, it was Moore +4.4.

(13,920 posts)that running a 50 state campaign, in every district, in every race, is a good idea?
A Democrat pulled a squeaker in Alabama, against a child predator. Its gotta sting for the Republicans to lose a senate seat in such a deep red state. More than sting, its gotta put some fear in them heading toward the midterm. But imagine what it could have been if the Democratic candidate had been running a fully funded, well backed campaign from the beginning. I see it as the difference between being just missed by a car as you were about to step off the curb.. and having a car drive through the wall of your bedroom as you sleep, demolishing your nightstand just as you were about to put the book down and go to sleep for the night. Alarming vs flat out scary.
