Biden records robo-call for Jones

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Joe Biden is swooping back into the Alabama special Senate election on Monday with a robo-call on behalf of Democrat Doug Jones, a Democrat close to Biden told POLITICO.

In addition to recording the call that will hit Alabamian's phones one day before they vote, the former vice president is planning to tap his large email list on behalf of the former U.S. Attorney running against Roy Moore. The call will make no mention of Moore, the person familiar with the plan said.

Biden, a potential presidential contender in 2020, is the highest-profile Democrat to appear for Jones during the race, with an October rally in Birmingham.

Since then, though, Jones’ campaign has been careful to avoid the perception that he’s getting help from the national Democratic party, which is widely reviled in the state Donald Trump won by 28 points in 2016. Biden, who is now on a book tour for his new memoir, has not reappeared in Alabama since that event.

Former President Barack Obama has recorded a robocall on behalf of Democratic Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore, CNN reported Monday.

“This one’s serious,” Obama tells Alabamians in the recorded phone message, CNN reported. “You can’t sit it out.”

“Doug Jones is a fighter for equality, for progress,” he says. “Doug will be our champion for justice. So get out and vote, Alabama.”
