New York City explosion: Live updates

Source: cnn

What we know now
What happened: A man wearing a homemade device attempted to set it off at Port Authority bus terminal near Times Square this morning. It either malfunctioned or didn't go off as planned, according to one NYPD source.
The suspect: One person is in custody, according to two police sources.
Injuries: Four people, including the suspect, were injured. None of those are life-threatening, according to FDNY.

Marlyn Yu Sherlock said she was on her way to work when the explosion went off.

“I was at Bolton's, a retail store on the main floor when people started streaming out of the subway level to the main floor, screaming, running in panic," she said. "I smelled nothing, heard nothing. The PA system was still blaring Christmas carols. It took about 4 minutes before men in black cop uniforms started shooing people out of Port Authority. As I walked further away from the building, I kept asking the heavily armed cops what it was. They said ‘suspicious package.’”

Subways were shutdown in and out of Times Square, so I had to walk for a bit (with lots of company on the streets!) but all okay otherwise. Lots of my colleagues still haven't made it in to the office yet, though.

and my sister was out of her mind until she heard her voice. I'm on the east side in the 30s and still plenty of sirens as of half an hour ago. Thankfully this didn't happen on a very crowded rush hour subway car.

With New Years weeks away, IS could be seeking ways to get through security at Times Square. I hope not and assume the FBI will get to the bottom of it. In that regard, it's good the bomber survived

As it was a live bomb.

When they do test runs, they come through with suspicious-looking packages (e.g., a backpack full of pipes) that are harmless with an innocent explanation (e.g., I was off to go fix my sister's sink. Unhand me you racist pig!)
