Schumer advised Trump to declare Jerusalem as Israel's 'undivided' capital
Source: The Hill
Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) advised President Trump to declare Jerusalem as the "undivided" capital of Israel ahead of Trump's expected announcement on the matter this week, Schumer told The Weekly Standard.
The White House said Tuesday that Trump will announce that the U.S. will recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, but will delay moving the embassy from Tel Aviv to there.
Trump had suggested in an October interview that he was planning to make a decision regarding the embassy, but wanted to give an Israeli-Palestinian peace plan "a shot" first, according to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA).
Schumer himself told JTA that he supported the U.S. moving its embassy to Jerusalem, and criticized Trump over his "indecisiveness" on the issue.

(37,648 posts)There are articles dated in October 2017 where Schumer criticizes Trump for being indecisive on this, about Jerusalem needing to be Israel's capital & the U S Embassy moved there for the 50th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem, which is this year.
Schumer's quoted as calling for this in speeches or interviews and whatnot. It's on Schumer's Senatorial website, too.

Well, Schumer being Jewish, I suppose he feels a close connection to the matter. I had a neighbor I knew pretty well. A Jewish man, though he didn't practice the religion and had never been to Israel. He referred to Israel as the Homeland, and strongly supported anything Israel wanted. No discussion, no wavering. He never entertained the possibility that Israel should compromise on anything, or the like. I can't say that's wrong at all. But it showed the strong feeling that some Jewish people have toward Israel. I can understand that, and suppose I might feel the same way, if I were Jewish. The Jewish people have a unique history in the world. That's bound to make an impression on descendants, regardless where they live.
I guess now we know why Trump sent his inexperienced Jewish SIL to work on a peace deal there. So he could say he "gave peace a chance" before he did this.
The Palestinians and other M.E. countries aren't going to like this. What could the ramifications be? I don't know.

(1,279 posts)I would just have remained at NSA headquarters Ft. Meade for another 6 months, probably along side some of the men from the ship. Then who knows where. Unfortunately, I had been diagnosed as a sociopath a few months before my discharge. Hence my 100% service-connected disability. No, they could not just give me a rifle and send me to Vietnam. They probably wouldn't care if I was killed, the problem would be if I was captured and turned over to the Russian military in North Vietnam.

(42,758 posts)The 2016 party platform: "While Jerusalem is a matter for final status negotiations, it should remain the capital of Israel, an undivided city accessible to people of all faiths. Israelis deserve security, recognition, and a normal life free from terror and incitement."
The 2012 platform: "Jerusalem is and will remain the capital of Israel. The parties have agreed that Jerusalem is a matter for final status negotiations. It should remain an undivided city accessible to people of all faiths."
The 2008, platform: "Jerusalem is and will remain the capital of Israel. The parties have agreed that Jerusalem is a matter for final status negotiations. It should remain an undivided city accessible to people of all faiths."
The 2004 platform: "Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and should remain an undivided city accessible to people of all faiths."
I don't agree with what Trump is doing and I don't agree with the inclusion of the above-referenced language in the Democratic Party platform. But just as I won't throw the entire Democratic Party under the bus for the platform language, I'm not throwing Schumer under the bus for basically reiterating that platform position.
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)If that is the case, though...then what's the big deal about Trump reiterating it? And WHY is the United States naming the capital of another country?
Clearly, we haven't been following this issue in the Democratic Party. Thanks.

(37,648 posts)But I disagree just a bit on that point. I think once an organized major party puts it in its platform, it has no basis to complain, when the country then does that very thing in practice.

I suppose that he could say that Schenectady is the capital of New York State, but I doubt that New Yorkers would accept that as a fact.
