McConnell: Idea That Government Could Shut Down Over DACA Is 'Ridiculous'

Source: Talking Points Memo

By ESME CRIBB Published DECEMBER 3, 2017 12:22 PM

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) on Sunday said he didn’t think Democratic lawmakers would be “very smart” to force a government shutdown if Republicans do not agree to implement protections for undocumented immigrants brought to the country as children.

“That’s a ridiculous position. There is no crisis,” McConnell said on ABC News’ “This Week,” of the hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants whose legal protections under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program were thrown into question when President Donald Trump rescinded the program in September. He said Trump has given lawmakers “until March to address the issue,” but said “there’s no emergency.”

“I don’t think that Democrats would be very smart to say they want to shut down the government over a non-emergency that we can address any time between now and March,” McConnell said. “That’s an very untenable position.”

The last time a political party forced the U.S. government to shut down, Republicans were trying to defund Obamacare in 2013, a strategy which ultimately failed.

you burned your life line on that subject. It will cost you big time. Watch for Fake so called News to run McConnell's comments up the flag pole later to day and fly it 24/7 for the next three days.

It may be a part of the reason why they shutdown the government.

But there are significant consequences to shutting the government. The idea that politicians would go to the mat for people that can’t vote seems crazy.

deport them (criminals as well as those that are law abiding). It should have been addressed by now -- it's urgent to them. Would you like to live in their shoes under such uncertainty of their future, I wouldn't -- makes me mad that they have to live that way. Their lives are basically on "hold" until RW politicians decide to kick them all out.

But I’m a cynic and believe most politicians would stop to check what voters think instead of just going ahead and doing the right thing.

get budget passed unless DACA is dealt with first. I understand the dilemma we're in but with our limited ability to control DACA situation at least we're going to the mat for them -- it's not much else we can do but it's something as an option to force republicans to deal with this issue now rather than wait until DJ's March deadline.

which is a terrible budget and hurts people..Itis not popular even with the GOP rank and file like the tax cut...I am not saying they should back down and vote for this...absolutely not. The GOP are in charge of the entire government and don't need a single Dem votes...it is on them. And they can talk all they want, they never supported a single Democratic budget...in years or helped Pres. Obama in any way...they will pay the price for any government shutdown. The Dems can merely look principled because they are and not vote for this monstrosity.

The problem is the Rethugs can't control a significant part of their own caucus, thus they have trouble passing a funding continuation, much less a budget, without Democratic support.
