UPDATED: In apparent shift, Trump tweets he fired Flynn for lying to FBI

Source: The Hill

BY JORDAN FABIAN AND JULIA MANCHESTER - 12/02/17 01:40 PM EST

President Trump said Saturday he had to fire Michael Flynn as national security adviser because he lied to Vice President Pence and the FBI, in an apparent shift from the reasons Trump stated at the time Flynn was fired.

Trump’s changing rationale is a discrepancy that will catch the attention of prosecutors on Mueller’s team looking into whether the president tried to obstruct the investigation.

"I had to fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI. He has pled guilty to those lies," Trump tweeted while traveling in New York City for fundraising events. Trump also stressed “there was nothing to hide!”

"It is a shame because his actions during the transition were lawful. There was nothing to hide!" he added.

Dem on Trump's Flynn tweet: 'This is obstruction of justice'

BY JULIA MANCHESTER - 12/02/17 01:20 PM EST

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) seized on President Trump's tweet about his former national security adviser Michael Flynn on Saturday, saying it was proof of obstruction of justice.

Lieu's comments come after Trump on Saturday defended Flynn's actions during the presidential transition as "lawful," arguing there was "nothing to hide."

Other vocal Trump critics seized on Trump's tweet Saturday, pointing to it as evidence of the president obstructing justice.

It's a bald-faced lie, and he damn well knows it, he just wants to try to bamboozle the short-memory base of his. It doesn't work with the rest of us, and it's an admission of obstruction of justice. He IS going down.

The significant date is not when Flynn lied, but, rather, when he was fired. Yates had briefed the WH prior to that time.
