(CNN)Several Congressional Black Caucus members are in talks to get veteran Rep. John Conyers to resign amid allegations of sexual misconduct, several Democratic sources told CNN on Tuesday.
Those members are trying to ease his exit without trampling on his legacy during his 50-plus years in the House. Conyers, a Michigan Democrat, is the longest currently serving member of the House of Representatives. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is not leading the effort but is tacitly supporting it, according to Democratic sources.
A staffer to a member of the Congressional Black Caucus told CNN that "there is a feeling among some of our members that we need to protect his legacy," noting that Conyers is a founding member of the group and was a leading figure in the civil rights movement.
The House Ethics Committee announced last week it had opened an investigation into allegations against Conyers after BuzzFeed reported that he settled a wrongful dismissal complaint in 2015 after allegedly sexually harassing a staffer. A separate woman told CNN Tuesday that Conyers made three sexual advances toward her when she worked for him in his district office in Detroit from 1997 to 2005.

(6,974 posts)From a friend in Michigan (A political sort) that 88 year old Conyers has been suffering from some type of mental deficit for a while. That "while" is roughly 10 years.
Conyers has a wonderful legacy, and if he was mentally fit to serve out his term, that would be one thing. And, if the allegations against him were true (sexual misconduct), punishment accordingly. But I honestly get the feeling that Conyers will more than likely have to leave because of medical reasons (Mental).
Conyer's legacy needs/deserves protection. The people/staff/women around him need protecting. And HE needs protecting.

"A second instance of an alleged unwanted advance came in spring 1998, she said. Maher was riding in the passenger seat of a car the congressman was driving to Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
He was trying to feel me up with his right hand, she told the paper. I kept pushing his hand away. Then he put his hand on my neck and started trying to tickle me. We were on I-75, and he was driving erratically. I was saved by the bell because we got pulled over by the police for the way he was driving.
In 1999, Maher was with Conyers at a meeting with ministers in Highland Park when the congressman allegedly put his hand up Mahers dress and whispered in her ear, I didnt know you had such great legs.
