Trump Sets His Sights On Welfare Reform

Source: Associated Press

By CATHERINE LUCEY Published NOVEMBER 24, 2017 9:42 AM

WASHINGTON (AP) — Overhauling welfare was one of the defining goals of Bill Clinton’s presidency, starting with a campaign promise to “end welfare as we know it,” continuing with a bitter policy fight and producing change that remains hotly debated 20 years later.

Now, President Donald Trump wants to put his stamp on the welfare system, apparently in favor of a more restrictive policy. He says “people are taking advantage of the system.”

Trump, who has been signaling interest in the issue for some time, said this past week that he wants to tackle the issue after the tax overhaul he is seeking by the end of the year. He said changes were “desperately needed in our country” and that his administration would soon offer plans.

For now, the president has not offered details. Spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said more specifics were likely early next year. But the groundwork has already begun at the White House and Trump has made his interest known to Republican lawmakers.

I guess tRump's decided to become Bizzaro Robin Hood. Take from the poor and middle class and give to the rich.

I bet he's going to end corporate welfare, too.

... reframing racial prejudice and resentment as an economic issue. Trump undoubtedly believes the right-wing myth that most people on welfare are black.

The biggest beneficiaries of the government safety net: Working-class whites
By Tracy Jan | February 16

Working-class whites are the biggest beneficiaries of federal poverty-reduction programs, even though blacks and Hispanics have substantially higher rates of poverty, according to a new study to be released Thursday by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

Government assistance and tax credits lifted 6.2 million working-class whites out of poverty in 2014, more than any other racial or ethnic demographic. Half of all working-age adults without college degrees lifted out of poverty by safety-net programs are white; nearly a quarter are black and a fifth are Hispanic.

The result does not simply reflect the fact that there are more white people in the country. The percentage of otherwise poor whites lifted from poverty by government safety-net programs is higher, at 44 percent, compared to 35 percent of otherwise poor minorities, the study concluded.

“There is a perception out there that the safety net is only for minorities. While it’s very important to minorities because they have higher poverty rates and face barriers that lead to lower earnings, it’s also quite important to whites, particularly the white working class,” said Isaac Shapiro, a senior fellow at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities and one of the report’s authors.

Welfare, as most people think about it, doesn't really exist anymore. Disability payments are a different story and people will get screwed (including a lot of Trump's base) if he succeeds.

the public should be viewed as part of a conspiracy to manipulate the president. Because, the longer they delay, the more Trump is given time to dismantle this country and turn it into something more desperate.

I don't know why people haven't figured out that our society disintegrates each time you cut off people from benefits. They will only have to resort to methods that will only affect us negatively, one way or another. It just becomes a meaner place.
