SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) Former U.S. President Bill Clinton is visiting Puerto Rico and meeting with those left homeless after Hurricane Maria hit the U.S. territory as a Category 4 storm.
Clinton arrived on Monday with medical supplies and solar energy equipment donated by the Clinton Foundation, which has already shipped 76 tons of medicine and medical equipment since the storm hit on Sept. 20.
Clinton also visited health clinics and the islands largest shelter with Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello. He was scheduled to meet with San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz and other officials later Monday.
Maria killed at least 55 people and is estimated to have caused up to $95 billion in damage across Puerto Rico.

Two months later: Puerto Rico doesnt have power, education or economy running again

It has been over two months since Hurricane María passed through Puerto Rico and the short and long-term future looks bleak indeed.
Just last week Gov. Ricardo Rosselló declared in the Senates Energy Committee that the damages suffered by Puerto Rico in the public and private sector are estimated at $94 billion. Between 70,000 to 100,000 homes were either destroyed or seriously affected by the hurricane. At least 55 deaths have been officially reported related directly or indirectly to the hurricane.
Even though the emergency conditions have passed and there is no immediate danger posed to the population, there is still urgent need to attend pressing problems. Most communities throughout the island have access to food, water and health services, although there are notable exceptions, particularly in the mountainous area of the island.
Most private schools have reinitiated classes, and many public schools have still to open. Bureaucratic infighting in the Department of Education appears to be the order of the day between teachers, parents and administrators on which schools to reopen given the sharp decline of the student population due to the decade-long migration. Most universities have reinitiated their respective semesters with difficulty and occasional interruptions.
The greatest challenge at this time, and the common denominator to many of our problems, is the rebuilding of Puerto Ricos energy grid. According to government reports, close to 50 percent of the power generation not distribution has been reestablished, although there are frequent outages. About 4 out of 5 people in the island do not have electricity.

(30,253 posts)It has been commended by the UN for their work to provide meds to people with HIV. It's thanks to the foundation that 11.5M people are still alive today. It also has an A rating.
On the other hand, Trump's foundation was a scam. He used other people's money to buy portraits of himself, to pay a fine on one of his golf clubs in FL and to make a $25K political contribution. Trump is a con man and a lowlife.

Why can't he go overseas and for any reason not be able to return. Maybe then I could sleep at night. That would be a nice treat.
