Russian operatives featured Paul LePage in Facebook posts

Source: Sun Journal (Maine)

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said Wednesday that Maine Gov. Paul LePage had been the subject of Russian operatives who posted on Facebook. The posts, which were targeted both in opposition to LePage and support of him and were placed beginning in August 2016, came up during an unusual open meeting of the U.S. Senate’s Select Committee on Intelligence.

Collins is a member of the committee, which is investigating Russian meddling in U.S. elections in 2016.

Speaking to Colin Stretch, a vice president and general counsel for Facebook, Collins said the posts, including two which attacked LePage as a racist, and one which praised him as a patriot, were an example of how far-reaching Russian interference was.

“And there were other posts that involved lower level officials in the state of Maine that we found as well,” Collins said. “The Russians continue to push this kind of divisive rhetoric to this very day.”
