Papa John's Blames the NFL for Hurting Pizza Sale
Source: Bloomberg
The remarks follow a controversy over NFL football players protesting during the national anthem, a movement that started last season. The demonstrations have sparked calls for a boycott and raised concerns among league sponsors. But Schnatters comments mark the highest-profile example of an NFL partner publicly blaming the outcry for hurting business.
Goodell, whose contract is up for renewal, has taken flak for not resolving the controversy more quickly. The flap has even drawn tweets from President Donald Trump, who called for owners to fire or bench players who refuse to stand during The Star-Spangled Banner.
Leadership starts at the top, and this is an example of poor leadership, Schnatter said.
Its hard to quantify the connection between the NFL and pizza sales, but Papa Johns did post disappointing results in the latest quarter. Its shares fell as much as 13 percent on Wednesday -- the most in two years -- after same-store sales missed analysts estimates. The Louisville, Kentucky-based company also trimmed its revenue and profit forecasts for the year.

(2,593 posts)I haven't had Papa John's since he started whining about treating his employees like human beings during the Obama administration.
Although they offer delivery in a small town, I prefer better pizza and a little inconvenience to giving this creep any business.

(4,483 posts)which is reason alone to boycott this fucker. Papa John's was sued for saying that their ingredients are "better" and fucking *won*.

(1,965 posts)Yeah, so say his ads. What they don't say is better than what. Better than crap I can find laying around my yard? Better than what falls out the back side of a horse?... Maybe. Better ingredients than the family owned Italian place down the road? Oh hell no. He's priced along with places that actually have excellent pizzas, while he serves up shit that belongs in the frozen dinner section at Kroger's, and even then I'd rather have a "Totino's".

(50,560 posts)Like you said, better than what. The word "better" without elaboration is "marketing malarkey." Obviously his ingredients are better than someone's ingredients; unless he says "better ingredients than Domino's" (in which case he has to prove they are...hard to do when there are only a handful of companies that supply the pizza-chain industry, and Domino's ingredients come from the same pot as Schlatter's) "better" is an essentially-meaningless phrase.

(1,965 posts)That his sales slump may be related to the fact that his pies are, if not outright shit, nothing special. That for about the same money you can get a delicious real pizza from a neighborhood family owned Italian place. Schnatters cowpies would be better priced along the lines of Little Caesars. 5-6 bucks for some cardboard and ketchup with toppings.
Then there is the time Schnatter whined about having to jack up his prices way up to cover the costs of the ACA and lowering his employees hours to 29 a week so he wouldn't have to cover them. Many people will never forget that that. I won't, and because of that alone he'll never make a dime off me, even if he somehow starts making the best pizzas ever.
To me, he shit in his own nest and now he can sit in it.

(10,303 posts)Domino's is at least better priced, for a similar pie. Cicis is better than Papa John's IMO for taste.

(11,257 posts)I mean, who cares about state-sponsored violence against people throughout the country when there's pizza to sell.
I know that the arc of moral justice is long and that it bends toward justice. I also know that the pendulum always shifts back and forth, but the backlash against jerks like Trump and Papa John can't come soon enough.

(45,457 posts)It's the invisible hand of the free market at work. The consumers have rejected his pizza as there are much better options everywhere. Most any local pizzeria is better. Many grocery stores offer pizza dough or pre-made crusts for those who want to delude themselves into believing it's more constructive to make it at home.

A saltine cracker with ketchup on it would be more flavor-able than what he passes off as his over priced pizza creation.

(10,129 posts)Maybe his way of reaching the consumer is bad. I watch games on my NFL app a lot. No commercials there. Also, when we order bad pizza, its dominos because their app makes it super easy. That is their plan and its working. See link:
