White Woman Arrested for Torturing Black Student She Called Jamaican Barbie
Source: Newsweek
Police have arrested a white University of Hartford student after she boasted online about harassing her roommate she called Jamaican Barbie by putting her toothbrush places the sun doesnt shine.
Brianna Rae Brochu, 18, was arrested and charged with third-degree criminal mischief and second-degree breach of peace on Saturday for bullying her university roommate, Chennel Jazzy Rowe. Rowe was not aware of the harassment until she discovered a post by Brochu on Instagram, where her roommate bragged about spitting in her coconut oil, putting moldy clam dip in her lotions and rubbing used tampons on her backpack for more than a month.
Finally did it yo girl got rid of her roommate!! the post reads. I can finally say goodbye Jamaican Barbie.
Rowe discovered the post as she was moving out of the room when she was approached by a fellow dorm mate and two resident advisers, who showed her the post. Rowe said she was moving out because her roommate had already been making her feel unwanted by turning off the lights in the room with Rowe inside.

(49,002 posts)Breach of peace is a misdemeanor.
Making someone ill is assault and battery and could be cast as attempted manslaughter.
She is from Connecticut. White privilege writ large.

(554 posts)And I think more appropriate charges will be forthcoming after more evidence is collected and tested.
On Edit: And I am sure they won't be misdemeanors at that point anymore.

I noticed there are many more retweets of that Shaun King identifier than there are likes - and there's a LOT of likes.
I sure retweeted it! I want that spread around - MASSIVELY.
May she not be able to hide in obscurity anymore.

(38,434 posts)away with doing these things, and have no consequences?
Where does one get that thinking?..Sure there is hate and evil out there. Many people think things, but don't do them, because "there are consequences". Certainly, this person must have thought that she could "do evil" to her roommate and not have consequences..Where did she get that thinking?

(3,613 posts)Used tampons contain a sort of genetic marker called DNA which enable law enforcement to quickly narrow down the culprit.
The application by used tampon of genetic markers for over a month remove any possibility of accidental use or mistaken identity.
The used tampons are highly personal in nature.
To summarize, this was a very specific and personal assault by someone that both wanted to be caught and wanted the victim to know exactly who the perpetrator was. To sere, it was a cry for help.
There was nothing about this crime that could be called simple bigotry. Simplle bigotry would been more specific to race and not the individual. Most likely it would have been more impulsive, and when done repeatedly over a long period, measures would have been taken to disguise the perpetrator.
Lastly, illness and bigotry are not necessarily exclusive.

(26,080 posts)And yes, all racism is horrific, but there are different levels and layers. This is someone who would be raping WOC if she was a man. This is pretty awful stuff, and we allllll know she will get a slap on the wrist. We need to start making people like this serve actual real state time, like those jerks in GA who tormented the birthday party.

(1,204 posts)Not sure what the typical legal ramifications are these sorts of cases, but being kicked out university and losing her scholarship is going to be pretty big hurt. Hopefully she'll learn how to be a decent human being who doesn't treat other humans like shit.
Imagine if she got away with this and she made it out into the work force. She would not have learned that this behavior is unacceptable (odd that anyone over the age of 10 hasn't learned this, but whatever) and she could very well move into a position of power over others. Scary thought. At least we got one of them before they moved into the real world. Too bad many such folks will pass through without being stopped early on, and we'll have to deal with their sadistic and psychotic tendencies. *cough* Trump *cough*

College roommates can be notoriously hard to handle in the best cases, especially for those away from home for the first time. But a viral video posted Monday by a University of Hartford student that alleges her roommate bragged about covertly harassing her for weeks has drawn national outrage and birthed the hashtag #justiceforjazzy.
Jazzy Rowe, who is black and a freshman at the University of Hartford, posted a video Monday evening that detailed the shocking allegations against her roommate.
In the video, she describes how she was finishing her move out of the apartment into another room when her roommate, later identified as freshman Brianna Brochu, who is white, paused her movie and asked if she was moving out, Rowe said in the video.
A few minutes later, Rowe said, she was notified by resident assistants to check her phone immediately. On her phone, friends had made screen shots of Instagram posts from her roommate (since deleted) in which Brochu allegedly bragged about covertly harassing Rowe for months.

Brianna Rae Brochu faces a hate crime charge in a case involving her former roommate at the University of Hartford, West Hartford Police said Wednesday. The university said Wednesday that Brochu is no longer a student there.
Brochu, 18, was arrested on Saturday after admitting to police that she licked her roommates dining utensils and smeared bodily fluid on the womans backpack.
University President Greg Woodward, in a press statement, said Brochus conduct was reprehensible and she is no longer a student at the University of Hartford. She will not be returning to the institution.
Woodward said, in meeting with the victim on Tuesday, he reiterated my personal commitment to ensuring she has all available personal and academic resources the University can provide.
