Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Wednesday fired back after President Trump ripped Schumer in the wake of the New York terror attack.

President Trump sent out several tweets Wednesday morning following the attack in New York on Tuesday.

Trump said the suspect came into the country through the "Diversity Visa Lottery Program," which Trump referred to as a "Chuck Schumer beauty."

"We are fighting hard for Merit Based immigration, no more Democrat Lottery Systems. We must get MUCH tougher (and smarter)," Trump said in a subsequent tweet.

Flake backs Schumer after Trump tweet

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) responded to President Trump's early morning tweet on immigration reform after the president attacked Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on immigration and referenced Tuesday's terrorist attack in New York.

Flake responded to Trump's assertion that a "Chuck Schumer beauty," the Diversity Visa Program, allowed 29-year-old suspect Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov to enter the country by reminding Trump that the 2013 "Gang of Eight" immigration reforms, written in part by Schumer, would have eliminated the program.

"The terrorist came into our country through what is called the "Diversity Visa Lottery Program," a Chuck Schumer beauty," Trump tweeted early Tuesday. "I want merit based."

"Actually, the Gang of 8, including @SenSchumer, did away with the Diversity Visa Program as part of broader reforms. I know, I was there," Flake tweeted at Trump in response.
