Trump delays release of hundreds of remaining JFK assassination documents, bowing to national security concerns

By Ian Shapira and Steve Hendrix October 26 at 6:15 PM

President Trump delayed the release of hundreds of classified documents related to the John F. Kennedy assassination Thursday evening, bowing to pressure from the CIA, FBI and other federal agencies.

The president approved the immediate release of 2,800 records by the National Archives. The rest would be reviewed during a 180-day period. White House officials said the president would issue a memo saying he had “no choice” but to withhold some of the documents.

On Thursday evening, the Post was still waiting to review the records to determine how many files were made public, how much new information they contain and how heavily they’ve been redacted by national security officials.

The government was facing an Oct. 26 legal deadline for disclosing the records, and Trump had tweeted twice that the documents would be made public.

That would warrant redacting and withholding release this many years later? I’m not playing conspiracy theorist here, I’m legitimately wondering what would be that important to justify this??

I can't imagine how national security could be conpromised by something that happened over 50 years ago.

Oswald was on the FBI and the CIA's "radar," and was being spied on.

And some of these agents who botched this so badly are retired, not dead yet.

Others have already died, but would have their reputations ruined completely by exposure of the botch.

Including J. Edgar.

Isn't it common knowledge that he routinely spied on people with no judicial approval or oversight?

I can't imagine what would make my opinion of him any lower than it already is.

In the aftermath of the shooting, the CIA almost certainly started investigating whether there was any involvement on the part of foreign governments. If documents contain information about highly placed assets in Moscow or Havana, that would likely merit significant redaction, even this much later.

why, but I also don't know why my military records are still flagged when I got out on May 29, 1967. Most likely, there isn't any reason for national security issues but just would embarrass some people.

We'll probably know soon whether they're released or not. Putin will probably know before the American public though.
