Obama discriminated against coal, nuclear: U.S. energy secretary

CAPE TOWN (Reuters) - The United States discriminated against the nuclear and coal industries under the administration of former President Barack Obama, U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry said on Wednesday.
Nuclear and coal ... Those two industries were discriminated against over the course of the last administration, Perry told reporters at an oil conference in Cape Town, when asked about a U.S. government directive to support ageing coal and nuclear plants.
The directive would reward certain nuclear and coal-fired plants that store 90 days of fuel on site for contributing to the reliability of the national grid.
U.S. industries that rarely agree, including gas drillers and renewable energy producers, oppose it on the grounds that it props up uneconomic generation.

(7,529 posts)You don't "discriminate" against energy solutions. Obama favored clean energy and of course was trying to move from coal (fossil fuel) and nuclear (potentially dangerous).
Saying he "discriminated" against coal and nuclear is like saying I'm "discriminating" against pickles because I don't like them. The pickle is in no way victimized by my avoidance.

Coal is over .. natural gas is cheaper, cleaner, and easier to use. Power companies have spent billions switching from coal to gas. Nuclear power is dead in the water because it is too expensive, could be deadly, and we
still have no place to put the waste.

Nothing wrong with discrimination per se.
The problem arises when there is prejudgement, as in bigotry, racism, and sexism, or when it is irrational ("they might be gay! That would disturb my religious fundamentalism!" .
