This is not the remnants of a hurricane, this IS a hurricane' - Red weather warning extended nationwide as Hurricane Ophelia barrels in (Ireland)

Red weather warning nationwide
Public urged not to travel and stay home
Employers asked to give employees clarification
Forecaster Evelyn Cusack: Weather event almost unprecedented for this country
All schools and colleges to close
Schools told to close, and ESB on alert with winds of more than 130km/h expected Monday

HURRICANE Ophelia will be the most severe weather event to hit this country since Hurricane Debbie hit in 1961 - resulting in 15 deaths - Met Eireann has warned. This evening Met Eireann confirmed that a red weather warning has been extended nationwide. Speaking on this evening's weather forecast, meteorologist Joanna Donnelly told viewers "this is not the remnants of a hurricane - this is a hurricane". Every school and college in the country will remain closed tomorrow as a result, the Department of Education has said.

The issue of red level severe weather warnings implies that recipients take action to protect themselves and/or their properties; this could be by moving their families out of the danger zone temporarily; by staying indoors; or by other specific actions aimed at mitigating the effects of the weather conditions. It is the highest level of alert Met Eireann can issue.

Technically Sandy wasn't a hurricane either, but the damage done was not different. I think Met Eireann is seeking to get that point across.

This will probably be worse than the floods they had a couple years ago.

Be safe, everyone!

Ireland's south coast and Cornwall, even far west France, are feeling the effects. Ventusky is my favorite site for tracking weather:

It's weird after the last few days of strong winds and rain from a different weather system.

There should be a few on-the-ground updates on Windy Wilson's Twitter feed: https://twitter.com/WindyWilson88

My favorite band, The Elders, are taking a tour group on their yearly trip to Ireland and Northern Ireland. It sounds like it's going to be a hell of a start.
