Trump: Filibuster Rule Is A 'Death Sentence' For Republicans

President Donald Trump reiterated his go-to solution for Senate stalemates during an interview with former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, saying Senate Republicans need to get rid of the filibuster rule.
I thought that when I got to the Oval Office, I would have a bill sitting on my desk, repeal and replace, a beautiful health care bill, and it didnt happen, he said in a clip of the interview that was released Friday. The full interview premieres Saturday on Huckabees new show for the Trinity Broadcasting Network. But remember it didnt happen because of a lot of Republicans and it happened, that horrible thing happened because of a few people, really a few people, he said, referencing Republicans like Sens. John McCain (R-AZ), Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) who werent shy about their opposition to the Senates repeal and replace plans this summer and fall.
But Trump cast the real blame for the Senates failure to get rid of Obamacare on a filibuster rule that allows the minority party in the Senate to force a 60-vote threshold on new legislation.
And the problem we have is we have 52 senators and they have to get rid of the absolutely crazy voting where you need 60, its called the filibuster rule its a disaster, ok? Its a disaster for the Republicans. They have to get rid of it. If they dont get rid of it, its just a death sentence, he said.

(31,131 posts)I admit I should know more about this, but I did predict that any rule that can be changed, ANY rule, will be, eventually by these filthy fucking racist god damn pricks.

(31,131 posts)Filibuster?
i.e. forget reconciliation for the sake of my question, can the Senate change a rule that would allow them to pass this with 50+?
Lochloosa
(16,073 posts)If the house passes a budget, which they have done, and the Senate passes the exact same bill, then it can be done under reconciliation. 50 plus 1 votes.
If the Senate passes a different bill it would require 60 votes to bring it to the floor for a vote. It would then be able to pass with 50 plus 1 votes.
Getting over the 60 votes to bring it to a vote is the hurdle.
There are weapons in the Dems bag to try and slow it down but it the repugs want to pass it they can.

(27,875 posts)McCain is on record as not supporting reconciliation, but I don't know about the other two.
If all three senators vote no on reconciliation, that only gives the Turtle 49 votes.

(59,507 posts)What IS different is that they have added as "amendments" bills that are totally related to try to get them passed this way. This needs to pass the parliamentarian. Note there HAVE been years when no budget is passed (2014 for example). Another point is that putting something in the budget does NOT make it happen -- an appropriations bill that includes it must also be passed.

(129,665 posts)and even then, the items in the bill must be "budget neutral". I.e., there are certain restrictions on what can be in reconciliation legislation (because really, the method is assuming that specific details would be worked out under separate legislation, which itself would require 60 votes).
Since money bills must originate in the House, and assuming the House is in cahoots with the Senate, then the House version has to be written so that it would be acceptable in the Senate under the Senate reconciliation rules and the Parliamentarian would be the one to decide if it is.

(36,962 posts)Both parties have had a chance to kill the filibuster and did not do it.
They both recognize that it can be useful to them in the future.

(3,257 posts)i really think he got a few R's to agree that if he didn't do it they wouldn't do it either. Even some R's know the basic rule of politics: you can lie and cheat, but you can't go back on your word.

(27,875 posts)I guess all we can do is hope that this vote will go the same as the Trumpcare vote.
But, if McCain is the only senator opposed to a reconciliation vote, then Trump wins,
(and the top 1 percent wins) and the rest of us lose.
