Wisconsin girl reaches plea deal in Slender Man case

Source: Associated Press

One of two Wisconsin girls charged with stabbing a classmate to impress horror character Slender Man will plead guilty in a deal that calls for her to avoid prison time and instead receive treatment for mental illness, attorneys announced Friday.

The deal calls for doctors to evaluate 15-year-old Morgan Geyser and report to a judge to determine how long she should remain in a state mental hospital. Geyser's co-defendant, Anissa Weier, faces at least three years in a mental hospital after a jury this month determined she was mentally ill at the time of the attack on classmate Payton Leutner.

All three girls were 12 at the time.

"It's been a tragic experience for everyone," Geyser's attorney, Donna Kuchler, said after the brief court hearing. "Our hearts go out to the victim and her family. And we're very grateful that the district attorney's office gave this case the considering it deserves."

How heinous an act is, no matter how revolting and reprehensible, should never supersede our consideration that these people don't seem to be of 'sound mind and body.' That is the first fact of an act we should always consider.

Go ahead - call me a liberal!

I was living in northern Illinois when this happened so local news were saturated with this story.

My issue is with the planning that took place then one girl changed the original day so as "to give her one more day of life" this shows thought and premeditation.

Punishment is where we meet as I have no clue what it should be, just a bit more.

"Planning and premeditation" does not make an insane act sane.

Giving the victim "one more day of life" (the victim is still alive, by the way) does nothing to mitigate the insane notion of believing that Slender Man exists!

The act of waiting could have been thinking the other girl would change her mind?

Why not kill or attempt it in the house?

The 'search' is for a rational behavior - even the concept of 'knowing' it is wrong - in the process of performing an insane act.

Just because someone plans, premeditates, 'acts' in a seemingly rational manner, does not make it a rational, sane act.

We know they intended to stab the girl and kill her, and, yes, that is a crime.

So Slender Man wouldn't come after them?

And again it would be almost impossible to come up with punishment. I have worked security in mental health institutes which were not vacation get a ways by far.

They showed the interrogation of both the girls. Morgan exhibited flat and/or inappropriate affect when recounting the planning and the attack. Maybe one of the most chilling things I've seen, and I'm a horror movie geek. IIRC, she was also receiving treatment for schizophrenia even at that age.
A mental health facility is obviously the better solution.
