Trump proposes higher payments for coal, nuclear power

The Trump administration wants to mandate that coal, nuclear and hydroelectric power plants get paid higher prices for electricity than they are currently receiving.
Energy Secretary Rick Perry sent the proposed requirements Friday morning to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), asking for quick action from the commission to protect coal and nuclear plants that are on the verge of closing because of competition or other economic factors.
Perry is seeking the new regulation in the name of electric grid resilience, which he said is threatened by coal and nuclear plant closures in recent years. It is the most concrete action yet by the Trump administration to try to save coal and nuclear plants, something Perry has named as a top concern.
A reliable and resilient electrical grid is critical not only to our national and economic security, but also to the everyday lives of American families, Perry said in a statement.

(17,863 posts)Which is the most flexible and robust energy source for base power. A robust grid is a distributed grid with solar and wind. Any other argument is specious.

(6,931 posts)We spend decades getting re-newables up and running to a point of making a difference and you want rate payers NAILED by your Coal and Nuke buddies?? Even in the Koch brothers owned Kansas we're at 1/3 of all energy is produced from wind and solar and soon to be 50%. It wasn't that many years ago it was 0%.
Westar Energy wised up and started building wind farms galore despite the Koch's and the other kook Republicans who run this State. NOW...they get asshat like Perry to coming running to their rescue.
Sure Rick,we as rate payers should be PUNISHED for using wind and solar to power homes and business.

(3,495 posts)The PJM grid did a study and concluded that taking coal and nuclear off their grid and replacing them with LESS expensive generation from combined cycle gas plants would not impact grid integrity. This is just a guarantee that you will be paying higher electric bills to keep these forms of generation operating.

(Valley Forge, Pa. March 30, 2017) The PJM Interconnection system can remain reliable with the addition of more natural gas and renewable resources, an analysis released today concludes. However, the report notes that an increased reliance on any one generation type brings resilience risks not accounted for under traditional reliability standards.
The report, PJMs Evolving Resource Mix and System Reliability, responded to questions about the effects of fuel diversity on reliability. PJM stakeholders had questioned whether the system is losing too many traditional resources as coal plants retire and nuclear owners consider their future.
This analysis underscores our responsibility to continue to operate the system reliably, and explore the role of resilience, the ability to tolerate unforeseen shocks and continue to deliver electricity, said PJM CEO Andy Ott. Different resources provide different reliability attributes, though new technology or regulations have the ability to improve those capabilities.
PJM needs to work with stakeholders and the industry to determine whether markets and operation structures need to shift to make sure that necessary levels of generator reliability characteristics are maintained in future resource mixes.
