Thousands protest ruling to overturn ban on 'conversion therapy' for gays and lesbians in Brazil

Thousands of demonstrators gathered in downtown Sao Paulo on Friday to protest a court’s recent decision to overturn an 18-year ban on conversion therapy meant to “cure” gay people.

Chants of "it's not a disease" could be heard over songs including Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" as protesters flew rainbow flags and held banners demanding human rights be respected.

"We have to help people understand that this decision wasn't something small," said Carlos Daniel, one of the demonstration organizers. "These types of thoughts are what get us killed here in Brazil every day. We are dehumanized and treated like objects. We have to show everyone that we exist and that the future is ours."

The challenge to the ban — which was instituted in 1999 by Brazil’s Federal Council of Psychology — came in a lawsuit this year from Rozangela Justino, a psychologist and evangelical Christian who had her license revoked in 2016 for offering the therapy and referring to homosexuality as a “disease.”

2. Not a single person has ever become heterosexual because of these "programs"

But a lot of kids have been screwed up for life with all the ice baths and electroshock. This isn't therapy to learn new behavior, it's to make any thought of same sex attraction linked to such harshly punitive behavior that the victim of the therapy lives in a state of personal and sexual dysfunction.

Anyone involved with these programs should have to go through them at another facility themselves; lets see how many times we have to deny you sleep and protein while shocking your genitals to get change their sexuality. Any parent who sends their kids to these programs deserves worse. Just my opinion as a survivor of both public school as a queer kid and a boot camp style program that my parents put me in to "make a man of me".

4. I'm pretty much at the point now where a member of the Trump regime could

eat a kitten on live TV, and it wouldn't surprise me. Every action these a**hats take is just another log on the fire while we wait for... something? For the Muller investigation that will produce a report that the Republican controlled senate will just ignore, even if there's grounds for high treason. Because they can't make the party look bad.
