Harry Dean Stanton, the actor with a gaunt, bedraggled look who labored in virtual obscurity for decades until a series of roles increased his visibility, including his breakthrough in Wim Wenders Paris, Texas, died of natural causes Friday in Los Angeles. He was 91.
The actor was also known for his roles in Twin Peaks, Big Love, Pretty in Pink and Repo Man.
He had a high-profile role as manipulative cult leader Roman Grant on HBO polygamy drama Big Love, which ran from 2006-11, and recently appeared as Carl Rodd in the Twin Peaks revival on Showtime.
His most recent film, Lucky, about an atheist who comes to terms with his own mortality, is set to be released by Magnolia on Sept. 29.

(18,837 posts)...which I believe is the first movie Arnie the Governator made after finishing up as Governor of CA.
He played a farm owner who runs afoul of bad guy Peter "I Need Unguent" Stormare from "Fargo."
He also had another amusing distinction...he was the host for SNL the night The Replacements were banned for life.
Goes without saying that he was one of those actors who made every movie or TV show he appeared in better, just by being there.
RIP.

(3,827 posts)I'd suggest seeing the Twin Peaks reboot if you haven't seen it yet- Harry is in a few pivotal scenes and his presence makes the new season worth watching.

(1,770 posts)In mid-January 1986 the Replacements received a last-minute request to appear as the musical guests on the January 18 edition of Saturday Night Live, replacing the scheduled act, the Pointer Sisters, who had been forced to cancel only days before the show. The invitation was partly thanks to the show's musical director of the time, G.E. Smith, who was a Replacements fan but, as a result of their shambolic and profanity-laced performance during the late-night live broadcast, SNL producer Lorne Michaels banned them from ever returning to the show. They performed "Kiss Me on the Bus" while completely intoxicated, and after playing an out-of-tune "Bastards of Young" (during which Westerberg audibly called out "Come on f***er" just off-mic) they returned to stage wearing mismatched iterations of each other's clothing. In a 2015 interview recorded for the Archive of American Television, G. E. Smith recalled that although the band had performed well for the early evening pre-taped dress rehearsal performance, one of the band's crew then smuggled alcohol into their dressing room and they spent the next few hours drinking (with the guest host, Harry Dean Stanton) and taking drugs. According to Smith, by the time of the late-night live broadcast they were so intoxicated that on their way to the stage to perform, Bob Stinson tripped in the corridor, fell over onto his guitar and broke it, and Smith had to hurriedly loan him one of the SNL house band's spare instruments.

(286 posts)They were banned because Paul said the f word off mic before the solo - maybe you could hear a bit of it? And they were drinking quite a lot before the show and got Harry involved in that - so I'm sure that didn't help them.

(9,287 posts)I got a lot more out of it because of that, even after the typical Lynch ending which left me crazy. How about you?
Harry's hit and run witness scene was great. Loved him being the mayor of the trailer park.

(3,827 posts)I knew what was going on from the beginning of the series- I even predicted a couple of big scenes on my Twitter account.
There were a few YouTube shows that I watched from other Twin Peaks fans. One was called "Twin Peaks Coffee Time" and the other one was from the "Obnoxious and Anonymous" YT channel. Oh, I almost forgot, I also watched "The Vlog Lady" on YouTube.
Most of my adult life has been devoted to worshiping David Lynch and Twin Peaks.
The new season pretty much started where "Fire: Walk with Me" ended- Stanton's character (Carl Rodd) was the manager of "Big Trout Trailer Park" in FWWM. He had a couple of scenes with Chris Isaak (Chet Desmond) and Keifer Sutherland in that movie.
Personally, I think there will be a season 4, or maybe a mini-series to resolve the lingering questions from season 3. Showtime seems to be open to working with David Lynch again. The current president and CEO of Showtime (David Nevins) worked at ABC during the original run of Twin Peaks in the 90s.
Lynch talks about the possibility of season 4 here:
ill it happen again, again?
That's the No. 1 question on the minds of Twin Peaks viewers following the end of the recent Showtime revival or, at least, a top five question. (Frankly, there are so many loose ends, it's hard to prioritize them.) At the very least, the way in which David Lynch and Mark Frost closed out their run on Twin Peaks: The Return has left onlookers wondering if there are plans for further stories centered on Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) and Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), or Richard and Carrie, as it were.
Regarding a fourth season, few people expected a clean answer from Lynch, a filmmaker who famously lets the work speak for itself. And while the answer isn't necessarily "clean," at least Lynch has finally come out and addressed the idea of further exploring the world of Twin Peaks and thankfully, the door to the Black Lodge remains open.
In an interview with EW, Lynch said that he hasn't yet begun discussions with Showtime about another season of Twin Peaks ("The thing just finished!" , but he seems open to the possibility: "Even if there was more, it would be four years from now before anyone would see it. We'll just have to wait and see."
As for whether Lynch has actual ideas for a sequel? "I can't talk about that," he answered, dismissing the question like David Bowie's Phillip Jeffries shouting down the subject of Judy.
For what it's worth, several people orbiting the Twin Peaks universe are eager for a comeback, including MacLachlan, who previously told The Hollywood Reporter: "I would love playing Cooper forever and ever. It's just one of those characters who seems to fit. David and I have worked to make this amazing world and character. I love it. I hate saying goodbye. I hate not seeing him every week on the television."
