End of an Era: Sen. Pete Domenici passes away in Albuquerque

Source: Albuquerque Journal

WASHINGTON — Pete Domenici, the son of Italian immigrants who became the longest-serving U.S. senator in New Mexico’s history and a nationally respected statesman and bipartisan powerbroker, died today at the age of 85.

The former senator passed away following complications from an abdominal surgery procedure.

His passing was confirmed by his wife, Nancy, and his son, Pete Domenici Jr. Domenici had recently undergone abdominal surgery and suffered a setback during his recovery. He was in intensive care when he passed away. The former senator died surrounded by family and friends in comfortable surroundings, the family told the Journal.

“He is out of pain and we all feel good about that,” the Domenicis said. “We are grateful for all of the people who helped here at the hospital and elsewhere.”

Sorry he's not still a sitting senator, since he's GOP and would've opened up a position.

Pete was highly regarded by everyone. Fairly moderate, old school Republican who'd actually compromise.

Also, he totally believed in and understood global climate change. This would have killed his career today.
