Mount Tongariro erupts

Mount Tongariro has erupted, sending red hot rocks and ash from its Te Mari crater, GNS Science says.
GNS Science duty volcanologist Michael Rosenberg said the eruption at 11.50pm last night was "really unexpected".
"You can measure and monitor and monitor but sometimes mother nature will do her own thing."
There had been reports of "red hot rocks being thrown out of the crater", several loud explosions and lighting when the eruption occurred, he said.
