Hurricane Irma has strengthened into a major Category 3 hurricane in a matter of hours after forming earlier this week, according to an advisory issued 4 p.m. Thursday (Aug. 31) by the National Hurricane Center. The 2017 hurricane season's 9th named storm, Irma is building steam in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa and heading west.
As of 4 p.m. Thursday, forecasters tracked Irma blowing winds near 115 mph -- up from around 100 mph logged at 10 a.m. Thursday morning. Currently, Irma is heading west-northwest in the Atlantic, but is expected to tilt more south-westward by Sunday.
Sometime next week, both American and European forecast models show Irma growing into "an extremely dangerous category 4 hurricane," according to the hurricane center.
"Irma is expected to remain a powerful hurricane for several days," the hurricane center's 4 p.m. advisory states.
