BERKELEY (KRON) — “No hate, no fear. Nazis get outta here.”

That’s what demonstrators are shouting at the Bay Area Rally Against Hate Sunday morning in Berkeley.

Protesters are carrying a variety of signs reading, “Always Antifascists,” “Impeach the Nazi,” “Drive Trump Out,” and other related messages.

Hundreds of people turned out for the event that is expected to last for most of the day.................................................

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — The Latest on protests in the San Francisco Bay Area (all times local):

1:10 p.m.

Police have helped right-wing protesters attending a “Rally Against Hate” out of a park after they were surrounded and pushed by counter protesters.

The skirmish broke out at the Berkeley protest between several dozen left-wing demonstrators and a handful of right-wing supporters.....................................

Several people were arrested at Berkeley’s Civic Center Park by police who have banned protesters from covering their faces and carrying a variety of items that could be used as weapons..........................

About 2,000 people gathered in what was billed as a “Rally Against Hate.” Opponents of the rally far outnumbered supporters.

Unrest in the United States was front and center for Russian influence operations on Twitter this week, as users in the network sought to amplify alt-right alarmism about the left-wing Antifa (short for anti-fascist) movement. For consecutive days, the most-tweeted link in the network by far was a whitehouse.gov petition to declare Antifa a terrorist group. In addition to pushing hashtags and a direct link to the page, stories about the petition were the most-retweeted over the last 24 hours by two different Twitter accounts for Russia today, while the RT-affiliated Ruptly pushed video of a fight between neo-Nazis and Antifa activists in Berlin.

BERKELEY (KRON)– Berkeley police detained the nationalist leader of the Patriot Prayer group in Berkeley Sunday afternoon, according to a spokesperson from the group.

Ryoga Viee confirmed that Joey Gibson was apprehended by Berkeley PD along with an associate.

KRON4’s Lydia Pantazes witnessed protesters throwing objects at Gibson and chasing him out of the area.

The Berkeley Police Department has arrested 10 people for various violations, including fighting, as tension grows between demonstrators protesting hate groups and supporters of President Trump on Sunday afternoon.

The mostly peaceful demonstration started heating up about noon at Martin Luther King Park, where the two rival groups faced off and several fights broke out.



There were shoving matches surrounding well-known Orange County far-right figure Johnny Benitez. Some screamed, “Go home Nazi!” as police tried to escort Benitez and Irma Hinojosa, a member of the Southern California group Latinos for Trump, through the crowd and out of the park...............................................

9. Black-clad anarchists storm Berkeley rally, assaulting 5

BERKELEY, Calif. — Black-clad anarchists on Sunday stormed into what had been a largely peaceful Berkeley protest against hate and attacked at least five people, including the leader of a politically conservative group who canceled an event a day earlier in San Francisco amid fears of violence.

The group of more than 100 hooded protesters, with shields emblazoned with the words “no hate” and waving a flag identifying themselves as anarchists, busted through police lines, avoiding security checks by officers to take away possible weapons. Then the anarchists blended with a crowd of 2,000 largely peaceful protesters who turned up to demonstrate in a “Rally Against Hate” opposed to a much smaller gathering of right-wing protesters.

Berkeley police chief Andrew Greenwood defended how police handled the protest, saying they made a strategic decision to let the anarchists enter to avoid more violence.

Greenwood said “the potential use of force became very problematic” given the thousands of peaceful protesters in the park. Once anarchists arrived, it was clear there would not be dueling protests between left and right so he ordered his officers out of the park and allowed the anarchists to march in.

I say fuck 'em, and fuck their boyish delusions of grandeur. Dr. King didn't need vigilantes to change the world. Neither did Mandela, Gandhi or Susan B. Anthony. Mark my words: 99% of these juveniles will never canvas a neighborhood, never contribute to a campaign, and never call their legislator. They aren't in it because they want to accomplish something; they are in it because tying on a black scarf and picking up a baseball bat strokes their sorry egos. If you ask me, they can go to hell.
