White House homeland security adviser Tom Bossert on Sunday claimed President Donald Trumps pardon of former Maricopa County sheriff Joe Arpaio was pretty straightforward, amid backlash from Republicans and Democrats alike.
I think its pretty straightforward, what the President did. I think theres some disproportionate coverage of it right now, Bossert said on ABC News This Week.
He said that just about every modern president ends up with some controversial pardons.
I think the Arpaio pardon is pretty straightforward, Bossert said. I think the Presidents been pretty clear on it and I certainly dont think its fair to characterize him as not caring about the rule of law.

(59,504 posts)1) He admits that it is controversial ... then says "all" Presidents have controversial pardons. My comment would be please list a similarly controversial pardon that Obama or GWB gave in their respective 8 years as President. First of all, I could find no pardon of someone before he was actually sentenced. Not to mention, for none of these did the President say of the crime they were convicted of -- that they were doing their job! So, given that the two most recent Presidents, of different party's did not do this -- clearly it is not true that "all Presidents have controversial pardons.)
2) When was the last time that a President's spokesperson say that "I certainly dont think its fair to characterize him as not caring about the rule of law. ? This implies that that is a common complaint.
3) Presidents "end up with some controversial pardons" -- is this like some picnics get rained out ? It suggests that forces other than the President set this in motion. It distances the President from what he himself did.
I watched it twice to take it all in, karennj you just got a 10!

Not usually during the first year of their administration. Does anyone remember a second term Gerald Ford?
