Las Vegas Sands target of money-laundering investigation – report

Source: Reuters

Las Vegas Sands Corp, controlled by billionaire Republican donor Sheldon Adelson, is the target of a federal investigation into possible violations of US money-laundering laws, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday.

The Los Angeles US attorney's office is looking into the casino company's handling of the receipt of millions of dollars from a Mexican businessman, later indicted in the United States for drug trafficking, and a former California businessman, later convicted of taking illegal kickbacks, the Journal said, citing lawyers and others involved in the matter.

... The Journal said there are no indications that actions by Adelson, who is the company's chief executive officer and largest shareholder, are being investigated.

... The timing of the investigation could open the Justice Department to criticism that it is politically motivated, the Journal said. Adelson is a major donor to the super PAC supporting presumed Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney against President Barack Obama and plans to spend $100m on Republican candidates in November's elections.

US authorities also are investigating the Sands to see if there were breaches of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), which prohibits bribes to foreign officials by US companies, in its Macau operation.

Today in our Toronto Star....

http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/article/1236916--toronto-casino-a-hidden-battle-for-the-prize

U.S. gambling giants working hard to win the coveted prize of Toronto are eager to fund non-gambling attractions at Ontario Place if they can operate a casino across the bridge at Exhibition Place.

That scenario — helping the cash-strapped province rebuild Ontario Place, pouring Exhibition lease payments into City of Toronto coffers and creating thousands of jobs — is being floated by some aligned with MGM Resorts.

Rival bidder Caesars Entertainment is also intrigued by the idea of an “integrated resort” straddling Lake Shore Blvd., with clearly marked sides for family and adult fun, but doesn’t want to appear to be pushing a particular GTA location.

Officials with those companies, along with Las Vegas Sands and Woodbine Entertaiment Group, are forbidden from publicly discussing their plans under terms of the “Request for Information” each has submitted to Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp.

But the Star spoke to several on background this week and discovered that, while officially quiet until Toronto council decides this fall whether to welcome a casino, the fight for what one called gambling’s “biggest opportunity in the world right now” is quietly feverish.

So, as I understand the OP, the casino's money may be dirty, but it is laundered thoroughly at the gaming tables before Adelson donates to the campaigns.

Of course!!! sarcasm.

These men (I have better names for them, but trying for civility here) run around the world making deals and building lavish casinos and resorts, with infrastructure provided by local governments (taxpayers.) When it works, the profits are obscene for the rich guy, and when it doesn't, no worries, the taxpayers get the bill for that too. A win win for Adelson and his band of merry men.

I get more real news from RT America, Al Jazeera English, The Financial Times of London, and other news agencies outside this country, than any American based media. It's all corporate controlled, corporate approved propaganda. 90% of ALL media in this country is owned by 6 corporations. Want an example? Just watch this.

money through a casino in the form of "gambling losses". Hell, the biggest drug king pins in Mexico could buy a U.S. president this way, with no money trail.

snip:
Sure, Democrats want to embarrass Adelson - who may become the single largest Republican donor this year - by repeating scandalous allegations contained in a lawsuit filed by a dismissed employee, alleging that Adelson conscienced prostitution in his Macau casinos. Thus, Chinese prostitution money was flowing to Republican coffers, they said. snip

Democrats never even broached allegations contained in lawsuits that Adelson - who according to Forbes is worth nearly $25 billion and is the 14th richest man in the world - stiffed his former driver and members of the detail that protects his family for required overtime wages. (Adelson was dropped from the former lawsuit, but his company is still a defendant.)

But those charges are still being litigated. So let's confine ourselves to the well-known things Democrats could have pointed out about Adelson.

For example, Adelson has elected not to sign a contract with the Culinary union, which is his right. But Adelson went further: When the Culinary staged a pre-opening protest at The Venetian, the casino's staff demanded police arrest demonstrators, and when officers refused, Sands sued. A federal judge determined the sidewalks outside Strip casinos are public forums, but Sands appealed that ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court before being rebuffed. snip

Wow, he wouldn't pay his driver and security overtime and he's worth $25 billion! Can you believe this POS?
