Federal judge tosses new Texas voter ID law; state plans to appeal

A federal judge has tossed out a new law softening Texas strict voter identification requirements.
U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos on Wednesday ruled that Senate Bill 5, signed by Gov. Greg Abbott in June, doesnt absolve Texas lawmakers from responsibility for discriminating against Latino and black voters when they crafted one of the nations strictest voter ID laws in 2011. The judge also ruled that the state failed to prove that the new law would accommodate such voters going forward.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton quickly promised to appeal Ramos' ruling.
Todays ruling is outrageous," Paxton said in a written statement. "Senate Bill 5 was passed by the peoples representatives and includes all the changes to the Texas voter ID law requested by the 5th Circuit."

(220 posts)Hi,
Although today was a nice victory, There is no reason to celebrate. Those of us that live in Texas know the Republicans will never stop until everyone is wearing The Brown shirt & Jack boots of the Rethuglicans. This may sound extreme on my part, but I have heard the private conversations of many of these people & some of the ones in office. These people truly believe that if you do not share their views, you are less than human. It is a truly frightful thing.
