NIH site drops mentions of 'climate change'

By DAN DIAMOND (ddiamond@politico.com; @ddiamond) 08/23/2017 10:00 AM EDT

NIH SITE DROPS MENTIONS OF CLIMATE CHANGE -- The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences has removed-and-replaced the phrase "climate change" with "climate" across its site, according to a new report from the Environmental Data & Governance Initiative (EDGI).

It's the first time that a website run by HHS or one of its agencies has swapped out the language since the Trump administration began, according to the environmental group, which has tracked changes to websites across the federal government. The changes appeared targeted to reduce the prominence of climate issues, a spokesperson for the group told PULSE, pointing out that other language on the pages was not affected. See EDGI's report. (1)

NIEHS also removed a pair of links that directed visitors to a four-page fact sheet titled "Climate Change and Human Health." The fact sheet (2) is still hosted on the NIEHS website. ... NIEHS, a division of NIH, is dedicated to the study of the environment and its effects on human health.

Other HHS pages, resources on climate change remain untouched. For instance, HHS.gov/climate still offers a review of policies, guidance and other federal resources on climate and health. "The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) considers climate change to be one of the top public health challenges of our time," the page reads.

WELCOME TO WEDNESDAY PULSE Where we're always happy to name names; we even have an occasional section, NAMES IN THE NEWS, dedicated to exactly that! (Perhaps that means PULSE isn't very presidential.)

Keep us fed: Send tips, quips and the occasional bold-faced name to ddiamond@politico.com or @ddiamond on Twitter.

Now that Trump has officially ended climate change, we can all rest easier. I plan on cranking up the AC (yep, 100% coal fired), with all the windows open, until it gets cold enough to wear earmuffs. I might even start a cozy fire. Just ordered a truckload of 1000 watt incandescent light bulbs, and I'm going to finally get that gas guzzling muscle car I've always wanted.

Thank you, Mr Trump, for getting rid of the words "climate change" so that we can all pretend it doesn't exist.
