Tropical Depression Harvey forms in Gulf of Mexico

Source: Nola.com

A tropical depression has formed in the Gulf of Mexico from the remnants of Tropical Storm Harvey, the National Hurricane Center said Wednesday morning (Aug. 23). Storm watches and warnings have been issued for portions of the Texas coast.

Forecasters said the storm could drop up to 20 inches of rain in Texas and southwest Louisiana through next Tuesday.

There is still uncertainty about how much rain the system could bring to the New Orleans area, where problems with the city's drainage system have residents keenly aware of the risk of possible flooding. The National Weather Service's Slidell office currently predicts about 5 to 6 inches of rain in New Orleans through Wednesday morning.

The track of Tropical Depression Harvey currently has it heading for the southeastern coast of Texas and then curving eastward toward Louisiana. Gov. John Bel Edwards is ramping up Louisiana's emergency response team in preparation for Harvey hitting the coast of Texas as a possible Category 1 hurricane as early as Friday.
