He wasn't impersonating Churchill. Hardy seemed to become Churchill.

He played Winston Churchill six times in all, even once in French on stage in Paris, but most memorably in the 1981 mini-series The Wilderness Years.

Hardy said himself of his complete immersion into the character, "My family complained loudly about my behaviour while I was playing him."

I'm always surprised when he pops up in an old movie and he's a young man and then, there he is in Harry Potter. Harry Potter introduced many young people to some of Britain's finest and most enduring actors. He was one of them.

The unflappable and eccentric Seigfried Farnon. It is said that Mr Hardy captured the character so well that even the real-life Seigfried was amazed at the resemblance.

You can watch all the episodes on You Tube, as well as the specials which talk about filming the series

He was a great actor

Me too. Any episode of ACG&S is comfort food for my ears and brains and Siegfried had *the* perfect amount of intolerance for stupidity brilliantly contrasted by a warm heart.

the books and the series.

Somewhere, years ago, I had a hardcover omnibus copy of the three books that contained all kinds of extra boxes describing life in Yorkshire. It had a recipe for Yorkshire Pudding that I still use.
