White House: Legal review holding up Russian sanctions

Source: Yahoo

WASHINGTON — Days after declaring that President Trump would sign legislation imposing tough new sanctions on Russia, the White House said Tuesday that his government lawyers needed to wrap up a “legal review” of the bill first.

Congress approved the bill, which also imposes punitive economic measures on Iran and North Korea, on Friday, sending it to Trump by a veto-proof margin. Later that day, incoming White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders issued a written statement saying the president “has now reviewed the final version and, based on its responsiveness to his negotiations, approves the bill and intends to sign it.” The statement made no mention of a pending review.

Asked on Monday why Trump had yet to sign the measure, Sanders told reporters at her daily briefing: “There’s nothing holding him back. There’s a review process, a legal process. They’re going through that. And he’ll sign the bill and we’ll let you guys know.”

Sanders added: “As with every very particularly complex piece of legislation — like this is — there’s a legal review.”

The speculation is that DT's considering issuing a Presidential statement watering down the bill.

(Reuters) - New sanctions against Russia proposed by U.S. lawmakers and which could harm European firms violate international law and the European Commission should consider counter-measures, the German economy minister was quoted on Monday as saying.

If the bill passes. It threatens their energy supply.

Perfect for American companies wanting to export LNG to them.

We should be careful about pissing off the leader of the free world, Angela Murkel.

Trump has found time in the two days since Putin’s decision to rail on Twitter about the news media and denounce Obamacare but has not said anything about Moscow’s retaliation. During the campaign, Trump routinely heaped praise on Putin.

Maybe he has learned something. Nope, he never seems to learn, just doubles down. Maybe his buddy in Moscow gave him the idea.

He makes me think of Mad Magazine. "What, me worry?"

15. His lawyers are looking for loopholes and a way out of the law. "He'll sign the bill." Will he?

Will he really? If he'll sign the bill, then what's the point of the legal review?

They're looking for a way NOT to veto it (Congress can override a veto), and change it on his own in some way.

He's so corrupt. And if he's working for the Russian govt, he's a traitor, isn't he?

But I'm not going to go out of my way to hasten that's day's appearance. Trump's doing the same thing with his buddy's sanctions.

He hasn't said a WORD about Russia kicking out 755 diplomats to retaliate for the U.S. sanctions. Neither has Tillerson for that matter. They've both voiced their displeasure about Congress's tough sanctions bill though. According to Tillerson, they wanted to "improve" relations and help spread democracy with Russia. Yeah, good luck with THAT! At a time when Putin is ratcheting up his dictatorial powers, spreading that "democracy" thing wasn't going to fly.

Funny, Russia seems to be the ONLY place on the planet where Trump and Tillerson had ANY sort of "diplomacy" planned.
