AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — The lower house of Jordan’s parliament on Tuesday scrapped a provision in the kingdom’s penal code that allowed a rapist to escape punishment if he married his victim.

Cheers erupted from the spectators’ gallery as legislators narrowly voted for repeal, following an emotional debate.

The vote was hailed as a major step forward for women in the conservative kingdom.

“This is a victory for the women’s movement and human rights movement in Jordan,” said Salma Nims, the secretary general of the Jordanian National Commission for Women.

We've been having similiar "debates" with biblical literalists for awhile now. Slavery, lgbt rights, womens' rights... the status of all these people being full human beings is undermined by the same books this rape rule comes from.

Really puts an exclamation point on need to maintain seperation of church and state, and shows how dangerous our modern literalist Republicans can be.

Nothing personal but that's pretty pathetic. But if you want to compare gays getting married (legal), slavery (illegal), etc with a rapist getting away with rape by marrying his victim, knock yourself out and look foolish. Nothing "similar" in the slightest.

You misread my post. I'm saying these sorts of laws elsewhere are an example as to why we need to stay vigilant with our own religious conservatives here and protect our seperation of church and state.

Also, it is similiar in that it is part of a literal reading of these religious texts. So they're directly related with precisly the same origins, books that have been historically used to justify monstrous shit (and still are), and are still used to justify many harmful actions among our allies and here in the U.S. I'm also aknowleging that this sort of thinking is prevelant among conservative Christians here in the U.S. People who fight tooth and nail against the idea that raping your spouse is a thing, think a woman should be an incubator for a rapists baby, think homosexuals shouldn't be protected from violence, promote the murder of lgbtq people in Africa, and so on. It's all directly related.

even REMOTELY the same but whatever. WE do have a separation of church and state - even as it's routinely challenged in the courts but letting a rapist off the hook if he marries his victim? That's just obscene and shows a complete and total disregard for ALL women.
