(13,526 posts)HOLY COW - he's already actually in homeland sec!!
David Clarke, the controversial sheriff of Wisconsins Milwaukee County and a conservative media darling, is joining the Trump administration as an assistant secretary in the Department of Homeland Security. Clarke announced the move in a local radio interview Wednesday afternoon.
The hiring comes as public scrutiny of the jail he oversees in Milwaukee reaches a fever pitch. There are about 3,200 county jails in the United States, but few have drawn as much recent attention as the one he supervises. Four inmates died while in its custody last year, and another sued the jail after her baby died shortly after birth. But local prosecutors have focused their attention on the fate of Terrill Thomas, one of the four, who died of dehydration in solitary confinement. He was 38 years old.

Up to now, we thought "Heck of a job Brownie!" was the worst possible person to take charge of DHS! Leave it to Cheetolini to dig deeper.

(12,673 posts)However, Kelly is a "hard ass/letter of the order" type that might or might not be an Oafkeeper. He's supposed to be fair but strict - but he never struck me as imaginative; one of those "tactical" thinking Marine Generals vice a strategic thinking. Give him a task or target, he'll get his Marines to do the job. He's not a waffler and commits 100% to his tasks. However, he doesn't tend to think much past the task on hand.
For example, he thinks "force-feeding" is humane if someone goes on a hunger strike, without considering larger ramifications of why the situation happened, or what else might be done.
He's also against women in the military, and thinks nothing with just replacing a "warfighter" (gods, how I hate that term!) for the next "Uh-Rah" warm body if the person becomes "damaged" or shows weakness under a difficult combat situation instead of perhaps rethinking tactics and working with what one has for an optimal outcome for the situation as a whole...
I'm almost of a mind he would have done more damage to innocents and the spirit of law in Homeland Security than he would at Chief of Staff. A lot depends on how other Cabinet and Agency Heads shake up, also.

(12,634 posts)but not a word of description on John Kelly. Who is he? Even CNBC doesn't seem to know. Probably some hapless guy who was walking by the W.H. when Priebus was kicked out the door.
On edit: Oh I see. He's a Great American and a General/Secretary. Of the United Nations? That's the only position I know of which has General Secretary as its title.

(21,646 posts)media the last few days I noticed and US sanctions plus the us has ordered embassy families out of the country as of yesterday
It would be an easier victory perhaps
The Maduro regime is already tottering, struggling to meet its financial obligations, feed its people and pay its oil workers, soldiers and police officers. Additional American sanctions just placed
which could send the country to move further toward dictatorship and toward an even closer embrace of China and Russia. The result could be more violent strife or even a military coup
Trump and oil buddies could try to weasel in and also prop up trumps failings here at home
Kelly was in SA post and has a long history with Maduro

(19,204 posts)Trump isn't aware that HE has to comply with the Constitution or Bill of Rights. If Kelly doesn't do as Twitler wants, HE'LL be out the door. And I think Trump would LOVE to "fire" a GENERAL! Trump would get wood over that, if it was at all possible for him to GET wood anymore. He's as impotent in real life as he is in the White House.
Military justice isn't going to stand in Trump's way. He really thinks he's King, or a dictator. This is why he'll never finish his term as President. He's a wild card that NO ONE can control, not even himself.

(19,204 posts)the Failure in Chief. If you choose GOOD people in the first place, you don't have problems like this. Problem is, Trump wouldn't know what a GOOD person looks or acts like. Trump knows trash, and that's all. Garbage in, garbage out. Trump thinks GOOD things are covered in gold, and that's the only measurement he's aware of.
